Mr. Paul Whitfield, 72, passed on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro, NC. The celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 12:00 noon at St. John AME Zion Church, 584 Pecan Road, Dudley, NC. He will be laid to rest at Wayne Memorial Park North, 1191 Old Grantham Road, Goldsboro, NC with military honors. There will be a viewing held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 11:00am to 12:00 noon at the church.

He was born on August 27, 1946 in Wayne County, NC to John Leslie and Ulebay Wooten Whitfield. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, siblings and many other loving relatives and friends.

Annie Jean Smith Creech

Annie Jean Smith Creech, 73, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at her home.

Mrs. Creech was born in Wayne County on December 24, 1945 to the late Hallie and Nell Hill Smith. She retired from the dietary department at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Creech had also worked with Kemp Furniture Company for 16 years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Princeton and was attending Tee’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 12:00 noon at Tee’s Chapel F.W.B. Church, 6434 Brogden Rd, Smithfield with Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday following the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Creech is survived by her husband, Jimmy Creech; daughters, Janet Creech and special friend, Michael Hanna of Atlanta, GA and Phyllis Evans and special friend, Tony Hamilton of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Anthony Evans and Lauren Evans; and a great-grandchild, Preston Evans. She is also survived by her brothers, Wayne Smith and wife Ann and Ray Smith and wife Kathy and several nieces and nephews she loved very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dick Smith of Grantham.

Eleanor Lancaster Smith, 82, returned home to our Lord and Savior after a long valiant fight against cancer on January 27, 2019 at 7:40pm at Kitty Askins.

Eleanor was born on April 07, 1936 to the late Silas and Mildred Lancaster of Wayne County, NC. From her birth until her final breath she covered everyone in love, prayer, and a comforting peace that only she could. Eleanor was devoted to her family. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. During her fight with cancer she did not complain one time or feel bad for herself, she knew God was in control over her life. Eleanor would say, “Don’t be sad for me, I know where I am going. I know I will no longer suffer and God is going to take care of me. Grieve a little bit and live a little bit. We will see each other again.”

She is survived by four sisters Inez Vail, Faye Massey, Louise Howell, Grace Howell, two daughters Debbie (Ron) Berry, Glenda (Wayne) Ketchuck, one son Mark (Susan) Davis, four Grandchildren Gary Bell Jr. (Nikki), Sherry (Larry) Lane, Jason (Darlene) Gibson, Jason (Crystal) Hamilton and several Great Grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Seymour Funeral Home Friday, February 1, 2019 from 1:30pm – 2:30pm with a graveside service following at Wayne Memorial Park at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Ct., Goldsboro, NC 27534.

Mother Dorothy J. Kelly, 75, of 119 Love Drive, Dudley died Monday at her residence.

She was born December 12, 1943 in Lenoir County, NC to the late Annie and Oscar Grady. She is survived by her husband, Ernest Kelly, and nine children.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 11:00 AM, at the Bryan Holy Tabernacle UHC, in Snow Hill. Burial will follow in the St. Matthews FWB Church Cemetery, in LaGrange.

Visitation will be held Friday, from 3 PM until 7 PM, with the family present to receive friends from 6 PM until 7 PM at the Haskins Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, where they will assemble in preparation for the funeral service.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: Her husband of 56 years Ernest Kelly, 6 son’s: Charles (Brenda), Maurice (Bethzaida), Ervin (Tabitha), Christopher (Keisha), Andre (Artemesia), and Wayne.  3 Daughters: Barbara, Minnie, and Darlene (Bernard). 1 Daughter/Niece: Sandra (Bob)

1 Brother: Stephen (Geraldine), 2 Sisters: Annie Parrott and Clara Markham

Sisters-in-laws: Angeline Grady, Selma Grady, and Clara Grady

Brothers-in-laws: Herman (Minnie) and Jessie (Dorothy)

1 Special Sister/Friend: Doris Artis

Also to cherish her memories are 20 grandchildren, 6 great-grands, many neices, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceeded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

Susan Ashley Jones Thigpen

Susan Ashley Jones Thigpen, resident of the Scott’s Store community, Mount Olive, passed away early Tuesday morning, January 29, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Ashley, in her short 33 years, accomplished much. She was a member of the 2004 graduating class of North Duplin High School and from her studies at Wayne Community College, she received degrees in both medical office administration and early childhood education, and was a certified nursing assistant. She loved her church family at Long Ridge Free Will Baptist Church, and was named Fire Princess of Oak Wolfe Volunteer Fire Department in 2001. Ashley learned from following in her daddy and granddaddy’s footsteps, how to operate the family dairy farm and how to operate and repair farm machinery. She had been a child care provider for neighboring families, had been employed at Countryview Western Store in Goldsboro and at Once Upon a Time Day Care near her home. Her last years of employment were at Vidant Duplin Hospital where she was admissions clerk in the emergency department.

Ashley is survived by her husband, Bradley S. Thigpen, and their daughter, four-year old Kalley Elizabeth Thigpen, both of the home; her parents, Eugene and Cindy Holmes Jones; a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Felix Jones; her grandmother, Sue R. Holmes; her mother-in-law, Debbie L. Thigpen, all of the Mount Olive area; a sister-in-law, Tanya T. Bright and husband, J.B. of Deep Run; Brad’s grandfather, Alfred Thigpen; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Adrian and Fannie Hill Jones and Stephen O. Holmes; and her father-in-law, Gary Thigpen.

Ashley’s life will be remembered in a service at 6p.m. Wednesday, January 30, at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Kelvin Coates, with visitation to follow. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 31, at Maplewood Cemetery. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Long Ridge Church, c/o Mike Davis, 182 Jeff Outlaw Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Robert Dale Bloodsworth

Robert Dale (Bob) Bloodsworth, 82, peacefully passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. Born April 28, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Arthur Dale Bloodsworth and Flossie Walters Bloodsworth.

Bob proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired after 22 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant. After his military career, Bob began working with General Electric and later retired after 18 years of service. He also worked with the Merci Disaster Relief Center in Rosewood for 10 years. Bob had been a member of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church and was most recently a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and the Methodist Men.

Bob was an avid Duke Basketball fan and found the simple pleasure in watching Duke win a game or almost equal: a loss by the Tarheels. He was a proud supporter of the second amendment and just renewed his concealed carry permit.

The family will receive friends Monday, February 4, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Pine Forest United Methodist Church followed by a service to celebrate Bob’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Madison Hankal and Rev. Billy Olsen officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Bob is survived by his wife of 27 years, Karen Bloodsworth (His Weezy); children, Robert Bloodsworth, Jr. (Lynn), William Bloodsworth (Cathy Dugan), Ginger Hutchison (David), Robert “Rob” Teasley, Jerry Teasley, and Kevin Teasley (Megan); grandchildren, Kimberly, Jessica, Joseph, Brittani, Cameron, Victoria, Joshua, Spencer, Zachary, Ethan, and Cole; great-grandchildren, Roxas, Chase, and Aaron; brother, Gary Bloodsworth (Jan) and nieces, Kimberly and Chrissie. He is also survived by his special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Aycock, Bruce and Becky Weisiger, and his lunch bunch.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Marlene Hall Bloodsworth and sister, Judith Bull.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Pine Forest Endowment Fund or the Friendship Sunday School Class at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, 867 NC Hwy 581 S, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Jimmy Darrell Creech

Jimmy Darrell Creech, 65, peacefully passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. Born November 11, 1953 in Johnson County he was the son of the late Thomas Rupert Creech and Doris Campbell Creech.

Jimmy, along with his son, was the owner and operator of Creech & Son Roofing. He worked hard for over 40 years at his craft, teaching his son everything he knew, especially how to treat people. He was well respected and was liked by everyone that knew him. His sense of humor will always be remembered by the many employees and friends he worked with over the years. He will be greatly missed by so many.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate his life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Ferrell Hardison officiating. Burial with be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Jimmy is survived by his wife and the love of his life of 45 years, Susan Hales Creech; two children he was extremely proud of, a daughter, Virginia Taricani and husband Bud; a son, Jason Creech; the apple of his eye and his only granddaughter, Charlotte Taricani. Jimmy will forever leave a huge void in the lives and hearts of his family.

Jimmy is also survived by sisters, Rose C. Howell of Goldsboro, Susan C. Bartnick and husband Heinz of Chesapeake, VA; a brother Tim Creech of Swansboro; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Don Creech and Ronnie Creech; and a sister-in-law, Terri Creech.

Jean Carol Jones, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Wayne UNC Healthcare.

Jean was born in Wayne County on July 21, 1935 to the late Joseph Eddie Jones and Emily Leona Beamon Jones. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Jean enjoyed life and got great pleasure when working on puzzles or crocheting.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Jean’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Allison Lancaster officiating. Interment will be on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Renee McRae Sparks, 53, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill surrounded by her family. Renee’s faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was her anchor. Her sincere smile, enthusiastic love of life, and concern for all people endeared her to those she met. She loved everyone, encouraged others, and had abundant energy.

Renee was born in Wilson County on February 25, 1965 to Patricia Pittman McRae of Goldsboro and the late Charles Bruce McRae. Renee enjoyed the opportunities given to her by helping to impact the lives of so many children while a teacher for Wayne County Public Schools and most recently at both Grantham Elementary and Middle Schools.

For those who knew Renee, she will be remembered for her dedication as a teacher and as a mother. She will be missed by many. The love in Renee’s life were God, family, and friends. Even during her illness she never gave up or let go of her firm belief in the power of prayer. Renee’s determination to let it be God’s will was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was a member of Love Memorial Baptist Church. Renee took great pride in her son, Matthew and loved watching him develop into the fine young man that he is today. Her daughter, Casey, provided many happy days and smiles that only a mother would love.

Renee enjoyed scrapbooking, horses, animals and spending time at the beach. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be missed.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Renee’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Love Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Toler, Rev. Frank Purvis and Rev. Steven Burrow officiating. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to her mother, Renee is survived by her husband of 29 years, Jeff Sparks; son, Matthew Ryan Sparks; daughter, Casey Nicole Sparks; sisters, Ann M. Smith and husband Chris and Leigh M. Cox and husband Dean; and her niece and nephews, Maggie Smith, Blake Smith, Josh Cox and Drew Cox. She is also survived by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Evelyn and Bob Sparks; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Craig and Kim Sparks and their children, Tim and Tyler.

Ted Tillman

Calvin Steele “Ted” Tillman, 88, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Wayne UNC Healthcare surrounded by his family.

Ted was born in Wayne County on April 3, 1930 the youngest child of thirteen, to the late William Henry Tillman and Gola Summerlin Tillman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alice Bradshaw Tillman. Ted had worked as a butcher and retired from the meat department at the commissary on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Ted was stationed in Germany and proudly served his country as a tank operator in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of Salem United Methodist Church. Ted was devoted to his church and was involved in many of their ministries where he utilized his abilities to share the love of God.

A service to celebrate Ted’s life will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Liz Hounshell and Rev. Sandy Schaller officiating. A private interment for the family will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Ted is survived by his daughters, Vicki Phillips and husband Tony of Goldsboro, and Lynette Overman and husband John of Pikeville; grandchildren, Nathan Overman, Matthew Overman and wife Samantha, Mitchell Phillips and wife Mary Beth, and Rebecca Harris and husband Will; great-grandchildren, Avie Overman, Sarah Overman, Greyson Phillips, Everly Phillips, Ivey Kate Harris and was anticipating the birth of Collins Tillman Harris in May.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 2706 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Daniel Dexton Mozingo

Daniel Dexton Mozingo, age 88, died Tuesday evening at Willow Creek surrounded by his friends and family. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late, Daniel W. & Effie Hazel Toler Mozingo. Dexton grew up in the Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church and more recently, Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a dedicated and loyal member.

He was employed by the Goldsboro City Police Department where he served the community for five years. He then worked 24 years as the fleet supervisor for Franklin Baking Company. He went on to own and operate the Gulf Service Station on Ash Street, and finished his working career retiring with Service Corporation after fifteen years. In his retirement he enjoyed lawn maintenance and was also a dedicated and loved employee with Shumate Faulk Funeral Home. He will be remembered as a loyal and dedicated member of the Goldsboro Community.

A service to celebrate the life of Dexton will be held Saturday at 2:00pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Berry House officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. Family members will greet friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Dexton is survived by his wife, Shelby Caison Mozingo; his sons, Drue Mozingo and wife Sonya, Stan Mozingo and Angie Mozingo; his grandchildren, Kayla Pounds and husband Jonathan, Seth Mozingo, and Tanner Mozingo; and a great grandchild, Ava Gray Pounds.

Sam A. Jernigan, Jr.

Sam A. Jernigan, Jr., 93, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Wayne UNC Healthcare.

Sam was born in Wayne County on December 19, 1925 to the late Sam A. Jernigan, Sr. and Bessie Williams Jernigan. He was co-founder, along with his father and brother, of Sam Jernigan and Sons Furniture Company, now Jernigan Furniture. Sam was married for 69 years to the late Marie Lawson Jernigan.

Sam was a firm believer in giving to his country and community. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WW II. Sam was a member of Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church where he served as a lectern and usher. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Sam was a charter member and past President of the Goldsboro Downtown Lions Club. He served as President of the North Carolina Lions Association for the blind and was a fifty three year lifetime member of Goldsboro Downtown Lions with perfect attendance. Sam served as a past District Governor and was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for his service to Lionism.

There will be a service to celebrate Sam’s life will be Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church with Father Pat Keane officiating. Inurnment will be take place Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Sam is survived by his son, Sam A. Jernigan III and wife Eleanore of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Conoley Jernigan Coonley and husband Howard of Philadelphia, PA, Sarah Elizabeth Kezirian and husband Stephen of Boston, MA, Sam A. Jernigan IV of New York City, NY, and Andrew Thomas Jernigan of Goldsboro; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn J. Pickett, Blanche J. Perkinson and Ruth Jernigan; and brother, Ed Jernigan, Sr.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Terrace Room of the Old Goldsboro Hotel in Historic Downtown Goldsboro, 104 S. Center Street, Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1000 N. Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Jeff was born in Goldsboro on November 16, 1950 to the late Fred Linwood Harrell and Thelma Jeffreys Harrell. Jeff was a lifelong Episcopalian.

In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents, Linwood Fred Harrell and Laura Young Harrell and Robert Alexander Jeffreys and Thelma Collins Jeffreys; his uncle, George Collins Jeffreys; aunt, Barbara Jeffreys Gotherman and her husband, William Wills Gotherman; aunt, Lucy Jeffreys Elliott and her husband, William Henry Elliott.

A private service for the family was held at Willow Dale Cemetery.

Jeff is survived by his son, Jeffreys Shadle and wife Hunter Blair Harrell; sister, Lucy Sterling Harrell and numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 North James Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Norwood Earl Eason

Norwood Earl Eason, 78, passed away Thursday, February 07, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.  The family will greet friends following the service.

Mr. Eason was born in Wayne County on October 06, 1940 to the late Woodrow Wilson Eason and Emma Joannie “Ann” Brown Eason.  He was a graduate of Goldsboro High School where he was proud to have been a member of the football team.  Mr. Eason was also educated at DeVry Institute in Chicago.  He was an entrepreneur of several businesses in Goldsboro including “The Nite Owl” night club, “The Coffee Shop” and “Home Furnishings” on East Walnut Street in Downtown Goldsboro and several arcades in Goldsboro.

He is survived by three sons, Norwood E. Eason Jr. “Jay” (Resa) of Charlotte, Scott Eason (Karen) of South Carolina and Todd Eason (Beth) of Wilmington; one daughter, Amanda Cwiakala (Chris) of Goldsboro; two sisters, JoAnn Marriner of Sleepy Creek and Sheila Davis (Billy) of Wilmington; his sister-in-law, Sue Eason of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Chris Eason, Nicole Johnson (Ricky), Kate Eason, Parker Eason, Ivey Wade and Jade Cwiakala and his loving, caring friends of the Boardwalk and Shagging Communities at Carolina Beach.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Eason was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmie Eason and Durwood Eason and his brother-in-law, Brooks Marriner Sr.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.

Benjamin Joseph “Ben” Flynn

Benjamin Joseph “Ben” Flynn, 20, was received into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

 

The family will receive friends Monday, February 11, 2019 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.  A celebration of Ben’s life will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Bethel Church in Goldsboro.  The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Ben worked at Staples as a certified tech and was recently enlisted into the North Carolina Army National Guard. He was a graduate of Marathon School and attended Wayne Community College.  Private Benjamin Flynn was a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard assigned to the 690th Brigade Support Battalion.

 

He loved everyone he met and had many close friends. He had a gift for living in the moment and sharing all that he had. He was an enthusiastic member of the Wayne County 4-H Team 3737 Roto-Raptors robotics team, programming robots for regional and state competitions.

 

Ben attended Bethel Church in Goldsboro and will be remembered by his friends and family for his energy and expertise with technology of all kinds.

 

His memory is honored and loved by his father and mother, Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Theresa Flynn; his younger sister, Emily Flynn and his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Teen Challenge.

 

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
