Pearl Phillips Moore, 69, died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. She was born in the Grantham Community, the daughter of the late John Henry and Lula Baker Phillips, and was the wife of Marvin E. Moore. She attended New Life Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be held on Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Mondell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Ann Gilbert and fiancé, Duane Beasley of Goldsboro; 2 step daughters, Betty Jean Arnold of Greenville, SC, Linda Blanton of Greenville, SC; and a step son Marvin E. Moore Jr. of Greenville, SC; and a granddaughter, Crystal Best

Imogene Jernigan Jones, 80, passed away Sunday at Willow Creek. She is the daughter of the late Othar and Hazel B. Jernigan, and the wife of James O. Jones. She was a former member of Love Memorial Baptist Church, as well as a retired secretary for Scott Motor Company.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Stovall officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A committal service will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 A.M. in Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jones is survived by two sons, James Jones and Douglas Jones both of Goldsboro; and a grandson, Michael Jones.

William Gerald Howell, age 67, passed away peacefully at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Zeke and Edna Eakes Howell. Gerald was a well-known farmer and member of Patetown Fire Department as well as a Veteran of the US Army Reserves.

A service to celebrate Gerald’s life will be held Thursday at 3:00 pm at the graveside located in the Pee Dee Howell Cemetery. The family request that everyone wear casual clothing to the service. Family members will greet friends Wednesday evening beginning at 5:00 pm at the residence.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Deborah I. Howell; his son, Willie Howell and wife, Thesia; his daughter, Dana Howell Pate and her husband, T Pate; his grandchildren, Joshua Lancaster, Riley Lancaster, Sarah Howell and Anna Howell; his special sons, Timmy Sasser, Pate Sasser and Marcial Felipe; his brother, Jimmy Ray Howell; his sister, Betty Carol Thatcher-Daw; and numerous special friends, that frequently stopped by the farm shop.

Billy Douglas Herring, 71, 339 Tram Rd.,left his earthly life to live forever with Jesus Sunday morning, December 3, 2017 at home.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at Brock’s Chapel Church with burial following at the Pate Cemetery. Visitation will be at Tyndall Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 5, from 6 until 9 p.m., and at other times at the home. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Brock’s Chapel Church, c/o Lynwood Herring,
519 Tram Rd., Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Billy was a long time member of Brock’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was on the board of trustees, was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and choir director, and had served in many other capacities through the years. He had been a volunteer fireman with Oak Wolfe Fire Department in years past and had just recently stepped down from serving on its board of directors. He had served for six years in the North Carolina Army National Guard. In 1970, he established Herring Plumbing and Heating which later became Herring Heating and Air, which he and his wife continued to operate until their retirement in 2006, and which is now operated by his son.

He enjoyed fishing, traveling, classic cars, and having a good laugh. He was “carried away” with his grandchildren and great-grandkids, loved his family immensely, and was dedicated to his church and serving the Lord, always taking every opportunity to tell of God’s greatness and saving grace.

Billy is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Glenda Whaley Herring, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda H. and David Cooke of Warsaw; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Julia Taylor Herring of Kenansville; six grandchildren, Justin Cooke, Haley Cooke, Dana Herring Turnage and husband, Michael, Amberly Herring, Holly Horne, and Maxton Herring; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Ethan Turnage; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. James Earl and Doris W. Herring of Mount Olive; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sandra H. Harrell of Mount Olive, Carolyn H. and Ray Bell of Mount Olive, and Bonnie H. and Doug Lambert of Faison; another sister-in-law, Linda Kaye K. Herring of Mount Olive; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Buster and Carol J.Whaley of Mount Olive; brother-in-law, Gerald Holland of Rocky Mount; and much extended family to include nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Hazel Brock Herring; two sisters,Vonda Lee H. Grady and Betty Gray H. Summerlin; and a brother, Donald Ray Herring.

Mrs.Billie Jean Price Jones, 81, of 407 Steele Street, Mount Olive, passed away Sunday morning, December 3, 2017 at home.

Graveside services will be held Monday, December 4, at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with entombment to follow.
Family and friends are being received at the residence.

Mrs. Jones was a retired teacher at Mount Olive Christian Academy and had previously been employed at Creative Cottage Daycare in Mount Olive. She also, for many years, had assisted her husband in the operation of Bill’s Body Repair in Mount Olive. She worshipped at Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Dean Jones Dunn of Mount Olive; a son and daughter-in-law Robin and Teresa Jones of Mount Olive; a sister, Hilda Price Cotton of Goldsboro; three brothers, Warren Price of Raleigh, Linwood Price of Mount Olive, and Carlton Price of Goldsboro; three grandchildren, Brooks Jones, Stephanie Miller, and Summer Welty; great-grandchildren, Payson Crawford, Cora Crawford, Miranda Miller, Raylan Jones, Cheyenne Jones; step great grandchildren, Mathieu Welty and Makinnely Wielty; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William D. “Bill” Jones; her parents, David and Samantha Lane Price; a brother, Kenneth Price; and a sister, Lovie Price Holloman.

Betty Clay Mansfield

Betty Clay Mansfield, 88, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at WakeMed Cary. She was born in Fayette County, West Virginia on August 21, 1929 to the late Jerome Clay and Gladys B. Boblett.

A service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held by the graveside at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Hwy. 70 West, on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dennis Atwood officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.

Betty will be remembered for her unconditional love as a wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to all. So too will she be remembered for her compassionate spirit and soul, and her gift of finding joy in doing random acts of kindness for others. Family was paramount to Betty, and she loved nothing more than spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her children, James Harold Guilliams and wife Mary of Mount Olive, David Jerome Guilliams and wife Barbara of Cary, Gary Lee Guilliams and wife Caryn of Warm Springs, VA, Tina Carol Gulliams Baxter and husband Ken of Cary, and Paula Gulliams Gardner of Apex; grandchildren, Hannah Lottie Guilliams, Kelly Short, John Short, Michael Short, Michael Toy, Samantha Toy, Clay Jackson Gulliams, Emily Lewis, Nathan Lewis, Morgan Raynor, Lance Gardner and Logan Gardner; sister, Doris Pishner and husband Paul; and brother, Jerome Clay.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Mansfield and brother, Bobby Clay.

Martha Dail Carlyle

Martha Dail Carlyle, 67, peacefully passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017. Martha was born December 10, 1949 in Greene County to the late Henry Allen Dail and Evelyn Craft Dail. Her husband of forty-seven years, George Wayne Carlyle, preceded her death on December 10, 2015.

With Martha everything revolved around her family. She always placed the needs of her family ahead of her own. Martha was always there with a smile and was everyone’s biggest fan.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor Martha’s life will be held Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. from Snow Hill Cemetery.

Martha is survived by three children, Michael Carlyle and wife, Crystal of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Amy Carlyle of Sims and Susan Carlyle Pittman and husband, Ryan of Wilson; her granddaughter and the apple of her eye, Natalie Grace Herbert; and her aunt, Hazel Craft Harrison and husband, Cecil.

Bruce W. Yelverton, 67, passed away Tuesday, December 05, 2017 at Avante of Wilson.

 

A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 09, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.  The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Mr. Yelverton was born in South Dakota on August 21, 1950 to the late Albert Lloyd and Elizabeth Barnes Yelverton.

 

He is survived by his brother, Albert L. Yelverton III and wife, Polly Boykin Yelverton of Wilson; sister, Betty Levy of Maryland; and his nephew, Bert Yelverton and great-nephew, Quint Yelverton of South Carolina.

Raymond Boyd Pendergrass, 74, known as Ray to most, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at his home.

He was a resident of Mount Olive and worshipped with his wife at Faison Baptist Church.
He was retired from Variety Wholesalers with whom he had been a regional retail manager.

Ray is survived by his wife, Lois Quinn Pendergrass, of the home; a son, Jeff Pendergrass and his wife, Kelly, of Fuquay-Varina; a daughter, Amy Pendergrass and her significant other, Christy Johnson of Belews Creek, NC; and three grandchildren, Sydney, Quinn, and Eli Pendergrass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernel and Esther Pendergrass, and three brothers, Clyde, Carl, and Leon Pendergrass.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, December 10, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, officiated by the Rev. Andy Beard and the Rev. Paul Rose, with burial following at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home during the hour before the service, and at other times at the residence.

Iva Jean Shaw Moore, 70, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Jean was born in Roanoke Rapids on January 30, 1947, one of eight children, to the late Willie and Nellie C. Shaw. She was a member of Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly. Jean was the rock of her family, her husband and children knew that she loved them with all her heart and truly was a blessing to them.

A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 11, 2017 at Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church, 9300 Johnson Farm Road, Kenly, NC. Rev. Lewis Godwin and Rev. Braxton Carter will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall following the service.

Jean is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald Henry Moore; son, Kenneth Wade Moore and wife Janet; daughters, Donna Jean Sasser and husband Jeff, and Tina Bradshaw and husband Chris; five grandchildren, three brothers, and one sister.

Susan Jane Tilghman Holland, age 66, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at Wayne UNC Healthcare Thursday morning surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in Wayne County, NC to the late C.L and Mildred Raynor Tilghman and was married to the late Terry Wayne Holland. She was a member of Love Memorial Baptist Church and was a Teacher’s Assistant for many years at Brogden Primary School.

A Funeral Service will be held Sunday at 2:00pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Tolar officiating. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the service. A Graveside Service will be held Monday at 1:00pm at Wayne Memorial Park. The family requests that everyone attending the service to wear emerald green and/or shamrocks in Susan’s memory.

Susan is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Jessica and Nathan Smith of Abilene, TX and Caroline Reynolds of Goldsboro, NC; her sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Mike Hancock of Lugoff, SC; her grandchildren, Alex and Isaac Smith and Kylie, Cayla, Chloe, Christian, Jr. and Cameron Lovic; her 4-legged canine companion, Bonnie-Blue; her special friends, Bud and Virginia Griffin; and her many students that she taught over the years at Brogden Primary.

Allen Curtis Powell, 86, passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at Willow Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Goldsboro.

 

Mr. Powell was born in Johnston County, NC on July 20, 1931 to the late James Robert Powell Sr. and Madge Sutton Powell.

 

He is survived by his son, Allen C. Powell, Jr. and wife, Sherrie of Goldsboro; two daughters, Patricia P. Womble and her husband, Johnny of Goldsboro and Melissa Powell of Texas; three brothers, Joseph Powell and wife, Margie of Mt. Olive, Willie Ray Powell and wife, Carolyn of Faison and Dewey Lee Powell and wife, Janet of Mt. Olive; four sisters, Sallie Hodgin of Goldsboro, Margaret Wells of Goldsboro, Sandra Foss and husband, Ronnie of Goldsboro and Doris Cherry of Mt. Olive; five grandchildren, Anthony Womble, Rebecca Adams, John Womble, Morgan and Kristen Powell and five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Blake and Cierra Womble and Holden and Lucas Adams.

 

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1:45 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Powell and two brothers, James and John Powell.

Tommy Allan Garrett, 56, passed away suddenly on Friday, December 8, 2017 at his home.

Tommy was born in Wayne County on August 17, 1961 to Kathleen P. Garrett of Goldsboro and the late Robert L. Garrett, Sr. He was a valued employee of Franklin Baking Company in Goldsboro. Tommy was a man of many talents from being passionate about cooking, to making people laugh, to going fishing and could fix almost anything. He was tendered hearted, a gentle giant that was larger than life and every life he touched he changed. Most importantly to Tommy was his family. Tommy worked so hard to make sure his children were well taken care of and he will be truly missed.

A service to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Huskins officiating. A private interment for the family will be held in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Tommy is survived by his son, Daniel Garrett; daughter Paige Vick (April); brother, Robert L. “Bobby” Garrett, Jr.; sister, Carol Anne Garrett Bowden (David); uncles, Charles R. Kulasxa and Hank Penwell; maternal grandparents of his children, Edith and Dan Perry; and several nieces, nephews and close friends. He is also survived by his faithful companion and k-9 friend, Reba.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Cynthia P. Garrett.

Elizabeth Best Jackson Williams, 83, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 12, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Jonathan Altman officiating, followed by burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.

She was a member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, enjoyed gardening, and been a farm wife. She had also been employed at Young Squire Industries.

Survived by son and daughter in law, Ricky and LuAnn Jackson of Mount Olive; daughter and son in law, Betty and Wendell Fordham of Selma; grandchildren, Kyle Fordham, Jacob Fordham, and Casey Jackson; a great granddaughter, Hannah Kate Fordham.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jasper Jackson and Elton Williams; parents, Hubert and Mathia Wise Best; sister, Eleana McCullen; and an infant son.

Sudie Mae Kearney Jones

Sudie Mae Kearney Jones, 82, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Genesis in Mount Olive.

Sudie was born in Wayne County on August 4, 1935 to the late James F. Kearney and Zulla Mae Sewell Kearney. She was a valued employee of Woodard’s Retirement Home in Goldsboro where she worked as a nursing assistant. Sudie was a member of Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a very caring and compassionate person. Her warmth, generosity and kind spirit were well known and cherished by those she encountered throughout her life.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Sudie’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Barry House officiating. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Sudie is survived by her husband, Leroy Jones; daughter, Barbara Jean Theesen and husband Virgil of Asheboro; son, Willie Junior Darden of Mount Olive; sisters, Elizabeth Radford, Joan Allen, and Rachel Pelt, all of Goldsboro; brother, Cornelius Kearney of Goldsboro; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
