Ms. Grady Sheryl Barwick Newcomb, 67, formerly of the Seven Springs area, passed away Saturday night, November 18, at Vidant Medical Center.

Visitation will be at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, and at other times, the family will be at the home of a son, James Michael Haley, Jr. in the Shine’s Crossroads area near Snow Hill.
Services will be Wednesday, November 22, at 1 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Smith Cemetery on Adams Road near Seven Springs. Officiating clergy will be the Rev. Sonny Griswold

Prior to retirement, she had been employed at Woodard’s Retirement Center, and in previous years at Med-Stat in Goldsboro.

Sheryl is survived by three children, James Michael Haley, Jr., with whom she had been residing in recent months; John David Haley and wife, Angela Doreen Haley, of Wilson, and Christel Michele McKinney and husband, William Leroy McKinney, of Haslet, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Layton Glen Barwick and Tammy Barwick of Mount Olive; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Carol Morris and Edward Morris of Toano, Virg.; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Barwick of Rocky Mount, widow of deceased brother, Warren David Barwick; her best friend of many years, Diane Coker of Goldsboro; nine grandchildren, Joshua John Haley, Charity Michelle Wooley, Jonathan Paul Haley and spouse, Trenton Haley; Hannah Victoria Haley Ziler and husband, Josh, Roy Brandon Wooley, serving in the U.S.Navy, Harley Marie Haley, Jake Straughan, Lindsay Kaye McKinney, and Gregorey Price McKinney; and five great-grandchildren.

Her parents were the late Grady Barwick and Norma Gray Ezzell Barwick who were residents of the Seven Springs area.

Opal Ginn Smith, 89, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Brian Center of Goldsboro.

 

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.  The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Mrs. Smith was born in Wilson County on April 18, 1928 to the late Charlie and Effie McKeel Ginn.  She was retired from R.G. Barry’s of Goldsboro.

 

She is survived by a daughter, Grace Jones and husband, Lyle of Goldsboro; one sister, Sally Carter and husband, Jimmy of Maryland; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and one on the way.

 

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Russell R. Smith and a daughter, Mary Geraldine Smith Darity.

 

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.

Kenneth Lee Mooring, 58, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro.

 

The family will be receiving family and friends at the home, 458 Lancaster Road in Pikeville.

 

Mr. Mooring was born in Wayne County on November 18, 1959 to the late Leroy and Helen Eunice Woodard Mooring.  He attended The Word Church.

 

He is survived by his son, Darby Mooring and wife, Miranda of Pikeville and four grandchildren, Megan, Audawen, Malaya Mooring and Collin Beasley.

Charles Douglas Owens, 67, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at his home.

 

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.  The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Charles is survived by his longtime significant other, Joy G. Renfrow; one brother, Johnny Owens and wife, Margaret of Eureka; two sisters, Edna Owens Baker of Eureka and Geraldine Owens Block of Eureka and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dock and Alvera Darden Owens.

Reid “Ray” Wice

Reid “Ray” Wice, age 83, died Tuesday evening at his home. Born in Pontiac, Michigan he was the son of the late Walter William and Martha Owen Wice of Glennie, Michigan and was the husband of Beverly Ann Wice.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Eastern North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Ray served in the United States Air Force for 22 years before retiring. He also worked at AP Parts and APV Baker until his full retirement.

In addition to his wife Ray is survived by two sons; Robert R. Wice and wife Billie Jean of Cabot, Arkansas, Timothy Ray Wice and wife Carolyn of Goldsboro, a daughter; Lee Joyner and husband Ricky of Mt.Olive, a sister; Jane Hughes of Lansing, Michigan, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A daughter Janice Lynn Green preceded him in death.

Pamela Louise Grady of the Scott’s Store community near Mount Olive, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, November 21, 2017 at her home at the age of 59.

A service of remembrance will be Monday, November 27, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with visitation to follow. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of her parents.

Pam is survived by her parents, Henry Carroll and Jean Grady, of Scott’s Store community; her step-father, Donald Dunn of Georgia; six brothers, Hank Grady, Kenny Grady, and Brandon Grady, all of Scott’s Store, Jeffrey Thigpen of Florida, Jimmy Thigpen of Kentucky, and Johnny Thigpen of Virginia; along with all of their families.

Her mother was the late Clystia Faye Holt Dunn.

Margaret Jean McCullen Shelton, 81, of the Dudley area, passed away Wednesday morning, November 22, 2017, at her residence.

She had been employed as a seamstress at Mount Olive Sportswear prior to becoming disabled.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Walter McCullen and Annie Pearl Wiggins Taylor; two brothers, Lawrence McCullen and Jasper Taylor, Jr.; and three sisters, Ann Reddish, Marie McCullen, and Yvonne Brogden.

She is survived by her husband, Edward L. Shelton, of the home; a daughter, Gail Davis Hargrove of Dudley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald M. and Sheila Davis of Dudley, and Don W. and Marsha Davis of Santan Valley, Arizona; two sisters, Carlene Calhoun of Arizona and Grace Bateman of Florida; five brothers, George Taylor and Lavelle Taylor, both of Scott’s Store, Ronnie Taylor of Clinton, Virgil Taylor of Kenansville, and Chestley Taylor of Calypso; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; and a special friend of the family, Ray Martin of Goldsboro.

Funeral services will be Sunday, November 26, at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Daughtry officiating, followed by burial in the Price/Wiggins Cemetery near Scott’s Store.
Visitation will be at the funeral home during the hour before the service, and at other times, at the home of George “Poly” Taylor, Tram Road, Mount Olive.

Nerius Carr Holmes Jr., 86, of La Grange, peacefully passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017. N.C. was born September 18, 1931 to the late Nerius Carr Holmes and Naomi Johnson Holmes.

N.C. proudly served his country in the United States Army. A lifelong farmer, N.C. loved the land and the farming life. Quiet, easy going and soft spoken, N.C. found great pleasure in the simple things of life. A man of great faith, N.C. worshiped his Lord at La Grange First Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Fair, honest and generous, N.C. was full of love and compassion for his fellow man. In his quiet time, N.C. enjoyed the challenge of a good crossword puzzle.

A service to celebrate and honor N.C.’s life will be held Sunday, November 26, 2017 at 6 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. from Fairview Cemetery.

N.C. is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Virginia Barwick Holmes; four sisters, Margaret Haddock and husband, Cleveland, Elaine Tyndall, Fay Letchworth, and Brenda Strickland and husband, George; four brothers, Gerald Holmes and wife, Nell, and Royce Holmes and wife, Elsie, Dean Johnson and wife, Edna, and Bryce Johnson and wife, Nelda; and a special friend who N.C. thought of as a son, Johnny Williams. In addition to his parents, N.C. was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Barwick Holmes; and two sisters, Merle Foss and Joyce Edwards.

Helen Butner Bame, 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning at her home.

Helen was married to the late Rev. Robert L. “Bob” Bame, Sr. who was a long time Methodist minister and Pastor Emeritus of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2017 in the Pikeville Cemetery with Rev. Phyllis Vail officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Bame is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Bame; and her grandchildren, Charlie C. Davis and Robert Lee Davis.

Jack Earl Thomas

Jack Earl Thomas, age 65, beloved Father, Companion and Brother passed quietly from this life on November 23 in Orlando, FL after a brief illness. Born in Waco, TX, he was the son of the late N.J. (Jimmy) Thomas, Jr. and the late Gay Thomas. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Eva Mae Harrison and N.J. (Jimmy) Thomas, Sr. Jack was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion Shirley-Hill Post 94 in Snow Hill, NC.

A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Park with Mr. Von Vernon officiating. The family will greet friends Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:30 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Jack is survived by the love of his life, Amanda Kear; sons, Brandon Kear and Jacob Buttersworth; his brother, N.J. Thomas, III; his mother, Diane Smith Thomas; brother, Brad Herring; and sister, Kari Herring Williams.

Henry Franklin Flowers

Henry Franklin Flowers completed his journey home on Friday, November 24, 2017 to the welcoming words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Frank was born in Johnston County on November 2, 1936 to the late Henry Nathaniel Flowers and Nina Peacock Flowers. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and later attended Edwards Military Institute. Frank also attended Elkins School of Electronics where he received his Federal Communications license. Frank came to Goldsboro in 1968 and started Southern Communications where he owned and operated this company until his retirement in 2000. During his communications career, Frank was instrumental in developing a relationship with the Wayne County Fireman’s Association.

Frank received salvation at an early age and answered the call into ministry with the Original Free Will Baptist Church in 1970. He was ordained to preach the gospel in 1971. He gave all of his adult life to the Free Will Baptist denomination, serving twice as pastor of Jackson Heights Free Will Baptist Church and later as pastor of Little Creek Free Will Baptist Church for 26 years. Following his retirement from ministry, Frank continued to serve as an interim pastor for several Free Will Baptist Churches and was a much called upon revival speaker. He also continued to teach at Carolina Bible Institute as well as lead numerous bible studies on Revelations. Frank was active in numerous denominational organizations, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Free Will Baptist Press and the Carolina Bible Institute.

Frank was an unusually fine man. He was adored by his family, for whom he was a source of joy and strength, but also by countless others, from old friends to new acquaintances, all of whom were struck by his quiet generosity, his kind and unassuming intelligence, and his innate courteousness. He cherished his wife and was role model to his daughter and grandchildren.

Even in his declining health, Frank continued to exemplify God’s love and a heart for serving others.

A service to celebrate Frank’s life and service to his Lord will be held on Monday, November 27, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, where he attended and was a member. A private interment for the family will be held on Tuesday in the Kirby Family Cemetery in Kenly. The Flowers family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Pleasant Grove Church and following the service.

Frank is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Jackie Flowers; daughter, Leigh Sanders and husband James; and grandchildren, Tan Sanders and Kelsey Sanders.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Free Will Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 249, Middlesex, NC 27557; International Foreign Missions, P.O. Box 159, Ayden, NC 28513; or Carolina Bible Institute, P.O. Box 280, Pine Level, NC 27568.

Charley Guy Sasser

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. II Timothy 4:6-8 Charley Guy Sasser, 67, went home to be with his Lord Friday morning after a long illness.

Guy was born in Wayne County on December 23, 1949 to the late Luby Guy Sasser and Lucy Epps Amerson. He had been employed as a truck driver for many years and had also been a faithful employee of Seymour Funeral Home. Guy will always be remembered for his love of a good practical joke whether done to him or by him as well as his true love of family, friends, life, and work.

A service to celebrate Guy’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Cotton officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodard Family Cemetery in Princeton. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 27, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. a Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.

Guy is survived by his wife, Margaret Dale Martin Sasser; daughters, Judy S. Hoggard and husband Gary of Goldsboro and Jean Hall of Goldsboro; sister, Barbara Sullivan and husband Buddy of Pikeville; brothers, L.G. Sasser and wife Gail of Pikeville and Eugene Sasser and wife Cathy of Grantham; step-brother, Ray Amerson and wife Jackie of Lucama; five grandchildren, Casey Sasser, Wyatt Hoggard, Jennifer Hall, Stephanie Edwards and Matthew Evans; and five great-grandchildren, Carlie Jones, Jessie Jones, Waylon Pittman, Ansley Jones, and Kallie Edwards.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Crystal Michelle Sasser; great-grandson, Easton Pittman; and sister, Betty Jo Sasser.

We would like to give a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center for the love and care they provided for Guy during his final days. Simple words cannot express our gratitude. Also a thank you to the caregivers at Willow Creek who cared for Guy over these past years.

Loretta Mewborn Butts

Loretta Mewborn Butts, 78, of Goldsboro was called to her heavenly home and reunited with her family on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

Loretta was born February 1, 1939 in Greene County to the late Paul Hodges Mewborn and Lillie Mae Herring Mewborn. In addition to her parents, Loretta’s husband, George Benton Butts, Jr. and son, Ricky Dean Butts preceded her in death.

Loretta’s larger than life personality endeared her to everyone she came in contact with. Her energy, beautiful smile and childlike spirit were infectious. Always organized and dressed immaculately, she was the center of attention in any room she entered. Her wonderful sense of humor, her gift of spinning a good story and her mischievous pranks captivated everyone who crossed her path.

A godly woman, Loretta worshiped her Lord at Jason Presbyterian Church. Her heart for service and desire to help was most evident with the North Lenoir High School Drama Department and Faith Christian Academy. Her servant’s heart always allowed Loretta to be available for others.

Always on the go, Loretta loved to travel. Her family has many fond memories of times gathered around the pool. Christmas was Loretta’s favorite time of the year and she rejoices in the great reunion she is experiencing in Heaven.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor Loretta’s life will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 4 p.m. from Mewborn Cemetery.

Loretta is survived by four siblings, Gary Mewborn and wife, Faye, Paulette Morgan, Claudia Rose and husband, Joe, and Tim Mewborn; two great-nephews Loretta thought of as her own, Hunter and Noah Reese; sister-in-law, Rose Butts Champlain; along with many special nieces and nephews.

William Lacy “W.L.” Johnson

William Lacy “W.L.” Johnson, 63, of the Calypso community, died early Saturday morning while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Senzel and her husband Tom of Florida, and a son, Chris Johnson and his wife Alison of Calypso; a brother, Jo Johnson of Albertson; a granddaughter that was the apple of his eye, Catherine “Scoobie” Johnson; a nephew, Charlie Johnson; two special cousins, J.D. Waters, and Sue Miller; and special friend, Danny Gwaltney.

W.L. was preceded in death by his parents; Albert Leon and Catherine Waters Johnson; and a special sister-in-law, Net Johnson. W.L. was a simple man, who loved his family and spending time in and around the Calypso community. He could often be found around the Beautancus Club pond, or simply hanging at the local Friendly Mart. He had formerly been employed with Tri-County EMC as a lineman.

A service of remembrance will be held on Monday afternoon, November 29,at 4:00pm, at the Calypso Baptist Church in Calypso. The Rev. Greg Day will officiate the service. The family will receive friends immediately following at the church and at other times at the home of his son Chris in Calypso. Memorials may be directed to the church in W.L.’s memory.

Gene Darius Godwin, 75, of Princeton passed away at UNC Johnson Health on November 25, 2017. He was born on August 16, 1942 to the late Raymond Edward Godwin and Bertha Rose Braswell Godwin. A memorial service will be held at Casey Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 6:00 pm with the Reverend Dennis Pollock officiating.

He is survived by a son, Neil Godwin of Princeton; daughter, Natalie G. Thompson of Princeton; sister, Joan Pipkin of Princeton and 2 grandchildren, Lacey Godwin and Augustus Godwin.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Casey Funeral Home Chapel.

William F. “Bill” Andrews

William F. “Bill” Andrews, 83, of the Scott’s Store community, Mount Olive passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Kinston surrounded by his loving family.

He retired as sergeant first class with 30 years of service in the U.S. Army and N.C. National Guard, was an engine mechanic, and had been an inspector with Guilford Mills.

He is survived by his children that he loved so much and was so proud of, son Danny F. Andrews, M.D. of Hickory (Jim Graham) and daughter Lovey Andrews of Goldsboro (Keith Jones). He is also survived by a beloved sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bill Teal of Leland, as well as his “little girl” and best companion, Snuggles. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law that were very dear to him.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Faye Marie Bishop Andrews; his parents William Walton and Corena Stilley Andrews; and a sister Peggy Andrews Maready.

Bill was a member of Snow Hill Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee for several years, and thought of all the members of the church as part of his family.

A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, November 29, at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive with burial following at Snow Hill Church Cemetery with full Military Honors. Church pastor Mark S. Hobbs will be the presiding minister.

Flowers are welcome but family prefers donations be made in his honor to the NC State Veteran’s Home (2150 Hull Road, Kinston NC 28501) or to Snow Hill FWB Church (c/o Jenean Kennedy, 1571 Red Hill Road, Mount Olive NC 28365).

Ingeborg Elisabeth Ambis Worrell

Ingeborg Elisabeth Ambis Worrell, 90, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Brookdale Country Day.

Inge was born in Germany on July 4, 1927 to the late Frederich and Paula Ambis. She was married to the late Wilbert Worrell. Inge was a member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro.

A private memorial service for the family will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Trailkill officiating. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Inge is survived by her son, Colonel (retired) John Paul Mikula and wife Jewell of Southern Pines; and two grandsons, John Alexander Mikula of Denver, Colorado and James Ryan Mikula of Richmond, Virginia.

Barbara Tomin Barry, 81, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Brian Center.

Barbara was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 3, 1936 to the late Teresa Tomin. She was married to the love of her life, Philip Gerard Barry, who preceded her in death on March 1, 2012. Barbara worked at the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Exchange and received many awards for her service. For many years, Barbara was a volunteer at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base pharmacy as well as with the Wayne County Republican Party. She also enjoyed bowling with the league at Planet Bowl.

The family will gather for a time of visitation on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Barry of Raleigh; her sons, Kevin Philip Barry of Goldsboro and Douglas John Barry of Florida.

In addition to her husband and mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen Barry.
