Desmond “Hambone” Barrow

Desmond “Hambone” Barrow, 86, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Wayne UNC Hospital in Goldsboro surrounded by his family.

Hambone was born in Greene County on January 21, 1931 to the late Sam and Nola Head Barrow.  He had retired from Franklin Baking Company and served his country in the United States Army.  Hambone’s passion was golf and was a frequent player at Lane Tree Golf Club.  If it was a beautiful day, he enjoyed being on the links sharing shots and laughter with his friends.

A graveside service to celebrate Hambone’s life will be held Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Snow Hill Cemetery with Rev. Mike Parks officiating.

Hambone is survived by his son, Dennis Barrow and wife Lynda of Wilmington; daughters, Brenda B. Turner of Goldsboro and Karen B. Beamon and husband Lynn of Goldsboro; sisters, Myrtle McKeel of Snow Hill, Jean Newsome of Wilmington, and Evangline Naylor of Goldsboro; and brothers, Raeford (Buck) Barrow and Ronald (GooGoo) Barrow, both of Snow Hill; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and his Lane Tree Golf family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Seymour Funeral Home.

James L. Joyner

James L. Joyner, 95, resident of Calypso, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at Genesis Health Care in Mount Olive, N.C.

He was the son of the late Lonnie and Mertie Joyner of Duplin County.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with Dr. Gregory A. Day officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Pam and David Rouse, 245 North Duplin School Road, Calypso.

Mr. Joyner was a long time member of Calypso Baptist Church. He was  a retired farmer, a retired member of Calypso Fire Department, and a World War II veteran.

He is survived by a sister, Betty J. Hollingsworth and husband, Ralph; an extended family including Joyner King, Pam King Rouse, Somer K. Tyndall, and Erin K. Brown; sisters-in-law, Melba C. Parker, Rita C. Best, and Mable C. Higgins.  Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins, along with many special friends.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myrtle Cannon Joyner; two sisters, Inez J. Grady and Viola J. Barwick; and two brothers, Roy E. Joyner and Ralph J. Joyner.

Jean Carolyn Davis, 71, of 104 Daly Blvd., MT. OLIVE, entered into eternal rest on June 12, 2017 at Wayne UNC Health Care. 

 

Jean was born in Duplin County to the late James Pearsall, Jr. & Dorothy Mae Davis Pearsall on October 11, 1945.

Jean leaves to cherish her memories one daughter Clara Jean Reed of the home. 

 

Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2017 from 2 until 7 pm at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ruth Jackson Herring, 89, transitioned on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Mary Gran Nursing Center in Clinton, NC.

Born in Duplin Co., she is the daughter of the late Junious and Rachel Farrior Moore.

She leaves to cherish her love and legacy to her children, Elder Joseph ( Mary) Moore of LaGrange, Elder Rachel McClain of Mt. Olive, Mary (Kerry) Lofton of Mt. Olive, Sharon Garner of Mt. Olive and Sheila Jackson of Lawrenceville, GA; 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 19 great- great grandchildren.

She has been reunited with her daughters, Linda Glaspie, Brenda Jackson and Cynthia Baker.

Tammy Lynn Snowden, 54, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.  She was born in Hawaii on May 29, 1963 to the late Marvin Gray and Maureen T. Kennedy.

Tammy was a beautiful person whose loving spirit and ever present smile radiated the joy she experienced in living every day of her life.  She was deeply devoted to her family and was happiest when she was spending time with them.  In her battle with cancer, she was a constant inspiration, and those who knew her will always remember her joy in living, her laughter, her positive attitude, her caring and loving ways and of course, her courage.

A service to celebrate Tammy’s life will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Robert Goff, Jr. officiating.  The family will greet friends following the service at the funeral home.

Tammy is survived by her daughter, Sarah Neider and husband Joe of LaGrange; son, Austin Snowden and wife Taylor of Pikeville; granddaughter, Isabelle Neider; brothers, Rick Gray and Bryan Gray; and sister, Tracy Martel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Larry Kennedy and brother, Ronny Gray.

Edward Ross “Buddy” Worley

Edward Ross “Buddy” Worley, 56, passed away Tuesday. He was the son of Myrtle W. Worley and the late Lafayette E. Worley. Buddy was a delivery person for Downe’s Auto Parts. He loved his family, going fishing, and working on cars.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Buddy’s life will be held on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Shumate-Faulk memorial chapel with Rev. Jeff Dail officiating. The family will visit with friends after the service.

In addition to his mother, Buddy is survived by sons; Jeremy Ross Worley of Pikeville, Edward Seth Worley of Dudley, and Jacob Wayne Worley of Four Oaks; daughters, Jodie Carol Smeal and husband, Christopher of Dudley and Amanda Kaye Worley of Dudley; sisters, Carol Teasley and husband, Roger of Garner, Janet Green and husband, Jerry of Greensboro, and Ann Sykes and husband Ken of Greensboro; and seven grandchildren.

Oliver Jacqueline “Jack” Scott, Jr., 64, passed away early on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at his home.

Jack was born in Duplin County on February 2, 1953 to the late Oliver Jack Scott and Mavis Sheppard Scott.  He had been an employee of Sears and later was a self-employed small engine repairman at his home. Those of us who knew Jack weep at our loss, laugh with our remembrances, and reflect deeply on how much he meant to us.  Jack had a wonderful sense of humor and never took himself too seriously.  He was a good friend, a great father and had a generous heart.  He provided a wonderful home for his family and gave all he could to his family and strangers alike.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Jack’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel.  Interment will follow the service in the Hill Family Cemetery in Parkstown.

Jack is survived by his wife, Sharon Overman Scott; daughter, Pamela Jane Scott of Princeton; son, Joseph Alan “Little Man” Scott of LaGrange; grandson, Brantley Khristian Farmer; and brother, Walter Scott of Mount Olive.  He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Sheila Overman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Whitley.

Adli Lee Pate, Jr

Adli Lee Pate, Jr., 83, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.  A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Adli Lee Pate, Sr. and Edith Jones Pate and the widower of Shirley Lewis Pate.  Lee was well known in the Pikeville community for the many years he was co-owner of Pate Service Station with his brother R. D. Pate. He was a member of St. Joseph United Methodist Church and was an avid outdoorsman and had a love of bird hunting.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Rose Hicks officiating. Internment will follow in the Pikeville Cemetery.

Surviving is his daughter, Jayne Pate of Wilmington.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Pate Robb and his son Adli Lee Pate, III.

James Derwood Dawson, Sr

James Derwood Dawson, Sr, age 85 died Saturday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Born in Wayne County he was the son of the late Lee Ashton and Ruth Grant Dawson and was the husband of the late JoAnn Brogden Dawson.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Wade Parker and Rev. Kenneth Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Burial will be held in Wayne Memorial Park on Wednesday at 11:00 am.

Derwood retired from Live Wire Electric Company as an electrician and enjoyed farming during his leisure time.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law; James Derwood Dawson, Jr. and Tony and Kaye Dawson all of Goldsboro.

Willie Myrtle Bell “Bill” Kornegay

Willie Myrtle Bell “Bill” Kornegay, age 96, died Saturday afternoon at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Duplin County, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Carrie Bell and wife of the late Jack Moore Kornegay, Sr. She was also preceded in death by a son, Terry Matthew Kornegay and a granddaughter, Karen Danette Kornegay.
She was a longtime member of Dudley Christian Church and a former member of the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Dudley Community Crime Watch.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Blane Smith officiating. Family members will greet friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her son.

Allison Nicole McCullen Thomas

Allison Nicole McCullen Thomas passed away Saturday night, June 17, at her parent’s home after a five year courageous battle with colon cancer.   Born September 6, 1975 in Wayne County to parents, Billy Wayne and Connie Thompson McCullen of Princeton, she was a preschool speech pathologist with Wayne County Public  Schools and a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church where she was co-director of Youth Ministries.

Allison always saw the cup as half full instead of half empty from a very young age and continued on with this philosophy throughout her life, including her daily trials with cancer.  She tackled cancer as she did everything else, with the determination to live and enjoy life.  Allison, a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, will be remembered as an inspiration for all by those who knew her because of her positive outlook on life.  Her attitude, along with her infectious smile and outgoing personality, invited people to love her, and loved she was by so many.  As one of her friends stated, “Allison made our little part of the world a much better place, and the world would be an even better place if we had more Allison Thomas’ around.”

In addition to her parents, Allison is survived by her husband, Michael Thomas, three sons, Gray, Cole and Nick Thomas, brother, Tim McCullen, all of Princeton, mother-in-law, Cindy Thomas of Granite Quarry, NC and father-in-law, Mike Thomas of Granite Quarry, NC.  She is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Marvin and Blanche Thompson of Princeton and paternal grandparents, Reverend Billie and Gladys McCullen of Grantham.

A memorial service in celebration of Allison’s life will be held at The First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Eric Packard officiating.  The family will greet friends following the service in the narthex of the church.

Douglas O’Brien Smith

Douglas O’Brien Smith, 78, left this world to be with Jesus early Sunday morning surrounded by his family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.  Doug was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose love for life and others was apparent to all who met him.

Doug was born in Wayne County on December 26, 1938 to the late Robert and Edna Butts Smith.  He had worked with Jennings Transmission in Goldsboro.  Doug loved Ray of Hope Church and was a dedicated and faithful member.  He had a large extended circle of family and friends and they were all very special to him.  Doug loved fishing, baseball, and Carolina Basketball but most of all his family.  He will be missed, but greatly remembered.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and following the service at the Ray of Hope Church with a service to celebrate Doug’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Tony Kopanski and Rev. Tom Dorman officiating.  Interment will be on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Doug is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mae Evans Smith; sons, Danny D. Smith, Stan Smith and wife Donna, and Tim Smith; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brothers, Jennings Smith and Colin Smith and wife, Freida; sister, JoAnne S. Sauls; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Smith and Delia Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Lee Smith and Reynolds Smith.

Arthur Leroy Boston

Arthur Leroy Boston, 78, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2017, Father’s Day, while surrounded by his family.

Art was born in McVey, Illinois on May 31, 1939 to the late Evan Leroy Boston and Violet Lucille Eubank Boston.  He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired in 1981 with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Art’s valor and skill was recognized with numerous decorations.  He loved fishing, hunting, camping but most of all his family.  He was known for his ability to repair virtually anything and for his great sense of humor.  Art was a member of The Lord’s Vineyard Church.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. at The Lord’s Vineyard Church, 3651 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro, followed by a service celebrating Art’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor David Hayes officiating.  Interment will follow the service in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with the rendering of full military honors.

Art is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra “Sandi” Boston; children, Sandra “Sandy” Boston Cook and special friend, Hank of Albany, NY, Jim Snowden and wife Tammy of Pikeville, and Wendi Scobey of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Jessica Edmister (Matthew), Stephanie Bennett (Adam), Sarah Neider (Joe), Ashley McKinley (Steven), Michael Hudson (Hannah), Jimmy Bundy (Christina), Austin Snowden (Taylor), and seven great-grandchildren, Alice, Summer, Cole, Lexa, Nicole, Ani Katherine, and Isabelle.  He is also survived by his sister, Sue Ann Schuetz of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews, he loved very much.

Graveside service for June Wolfe, Jr., 81, of Belton will be Wednesday June 21, 2017 at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple with Allen Lowe officiating.

 

Mr. Wolfe died Sunday, June 18, 2017 in a Temple hospital.

 

Mr. Wolfe was born November 11, 1935 in Mount Olive, NC, the son of June Elmer Sr, and Lela (Miller) Wolfe. He married Dorothy Matthews on March 13, 1960 in Augusta, Georgia.

 

He received a Bachelor’s degree in General Science and Sociology from Wake Forest University and a Masters of Criminal Justice from American Technological University. He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Criminal Justice Honor Fraternity.

He served 21 years in the United States Army and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following his military service he was a Texas parole officer for 17 years.

 

He is preceded in death by his son, John Julian Wolfe.

 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wolfe, a son June Wolfe, III and wife Cynthia of Belton; a daughter Lisa Cantacuzene of Morgans Point Resort; his twin brother, Gene Wolfe of Surfcity NC; three grandchildren, Matthew Wolfe, Grant Wolfe and Rody Cantacuzene and two nieces, Allene Batchelor and Susan Sartip.

 

Visitation will be Tuesday June 20, 2017 from 6 to 8 at Dossman funeral home in Belton.
