Gene Colin Palmer, 80, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
Gene was born in Palmerton, Pennsylvania on July 20, 1936 to the late Alfred and Irene Soos Palmer. He retired from the United States Air Force after 26 years of service with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Gene lived his dream proudly serving as Senior Enlisted Advisor in the Air Force. He will always be remembered for his incredible intelligence, his kindness, and his patriotism. Gene’s valor and skill was recognized with numerous decorations. Following his military career, Gene worked for 28 years as a clerk with the United States Postal Service.
A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Rev. Joanna Stallings and his son-in-law, Rev. Steven King will officiate. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors.
Gene is survived by his wife of 57 years, Verlyn Sherle Gurley Palmer; daughters, Terry P. King and husband Steven of Lincolnton and Tracy P. Schreffler and husband Eric of Goldsboro; brother, Stephen Palmer of Wetumpka, AL; grandchildren, Krystle Raynor and husband Paul of Graham, Leanna King of Seattle, WA, Dylan Schreffler and Dalton Schreffler of Goldsboro; and great-grandchildren, Brett Raynor and Paige Raynor.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
