Selma Anderson Gurley

Selma Anderson Gurley, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2020 while being cared for at Woodard’s Care.

Selma was born in Lenoir County on May 7, 1933 to the late Earl and Blanche Smith Anderson. She was married to the late Archie Joe “John” Gurley, Jr. Selma was a 1951 graduate of New Hope High School. She was a valued employee of the Rosewood Daycare until her retirement in 2010. Selma enjoyed the opportunities given to her by helping to impact the lives of so many children she kept at the daycare. She was also one of the founding members of the Oakland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She will be remembered as one of the kindest and most loving mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers as well as a special friend to many. Selma will be missed by all who were blessed enough to know her.

A service for the family and close friends will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Linda Burroughs officiating.

Selma is survived by her daughter, Evonne Milkovits and husband Johnny of Goldsboro; son, A. Joe Gurley III and wife Dana of Goldsboro; granddaughters, Kelli Bell and husband John and Kerri Jo Gurley; great-granddaughter, Averi Bell; sisters, Frankie Collins and Edna King; and her uncle, C. Ray Smith and wife Lucille.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Vernon Anderson, Martin Anderson and Jesse Anderson; and sister, Bernice Jones.
