Hazel Kornegay Thornton, 92, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 25, 2016 while a resident of Genesis Healthcare – Mount Olive Center.
Hazel was born in Wayne County on May 26, 1924, one of ten children, to the late Dawson and Sarah Capps Kornegay. She was married to the late Young Edward Thornton. Her most significant role in life and what she did best was being a loving mother to her children. Hazel was the rock of her family, her husband and children knew that she loved them with all her heart and truly was a blessing to them. She was a member of Black Jack Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
A service celebrating Hazel’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Providence United Methodist Church.
Hazel is survived by her daughters, Betty L. Rose (Jimmy) of Rocky Mount, Edith Shivar (D.W.) of Seven Springs, and Brenda Etheridge (Elton) of Wilson; sons, Rev. Edward L. Thornton (Brenda) of Snow Hill, Cecil Roger Thornton (Ruth) of Dudley and Ted R. Thornton (Kim) of Mount Olive; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived a special friend and caregiver, Rose Hickman.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Dawson Thornton.
