Mary Ann Tyson Stokes, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15, 2019 after several years of declining physical and mental health.

Mary was born in Pitt County on October 23, 1937 to the late Glenn and Ina Mae Jones Tyson. She was preceded in death by her husband, USAF Col. Elbert R. Stokes. As an Air Force wife, Mary created a safe and comfortable home for her family at every place they lived. She loved playing games with friends and family. There was always much laughter and friendly competition.

Mary was active in the Officer’s Wives Club and taught many to play Mah Jong, one of her favorite games. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Mobile in Goldsboro for many years.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a private graveside service for the family at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mary is survived by her children, Deborah Stout and husband Robert of Wendell, Sharon Grantham and husband Garry of Pikeville and Timothy Stokes of Norristown, PA; grandchildren, Troy Tyson Benton (Holly) of Apex, Jonathan Stout of Ashland City, TN and Jennings Stout (Samantha) of Bardstown, KY; step grandchildren, Ashley Lankford (Chad) of Nesbit, MS, Ray Lanier of Wilmington, Kellie Davis (Craig) of Goldsboro and Brent Grantham (Gina) Beautancus; and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Clara Sauls of Eureka; brother, James Tyson of Wilson; and sister-in-law, Patricia Tyson of China Grove.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Tyson, Jr.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the staff at Brookdale and to Crystal with Community Home Care and Hospice. Love and heartfelt thanks is also expressed to the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center and to her dear friend, Erica, who provided tender care for Mrs. Stokes in her final 1 ½ years of life.
