Margie Gray Overby Barnette, age 89, of Wilson, died Saturday at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Wayne County, daughter of the late Junious Lassiter Overby & Elizabeth Warrick Overby. Mrs. Barnette completed her high school education at Wilson Technical Community College and continued there obtaining her CNA certificate. Following a course through the N. C. Real Estate Board, she received her real estate license on her first attempt through testing. Married to the late Clarence Edgar Barnette, she was formerly employed with Carolina Casual. She began attending Lodge Street Church of God when it started as a tent revival in 1948, and is now known as Farmington Heights Church of God. She served in nearly every capacity in her church through the years from Sunday School teacher to cook.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Tuesday, September 17, at 2PM at Farmington Heights Church of God (Surge Center) in Wilson with Rev. Lavon Phillips & Rev. Jerry Nelson officiating. Family members will visit with friends from 12:30-1:45 prior to the service. A private graveside service will be held at Stantonsburg Cemetery.
Mrs. Barnette is survived by two sons & daughters-in-law, Clarence & Gilda Barnette, Melvin & Rhonda Barnette, all of Wilson; 3 grandchildren, Heather Goff (Eric), Staci Stone (Daniel), & Matthew Barnette (Hayley), all of Wilson; 8 great grandchildren, Taylor, MacKenzie, & Brooklyn Goff; Pierce, Elizabeth, & Nora Stone; Luca & Milo Barnette. In addition to her husband & parents, Mrs. Barnette was preceded in death by her only sister, Maude Overby Pittman.
