September 1, 89, Goldsboro

Evelyn Garris Grant, 89, of Goldsboro, was called home on Sunday, September 1, 2019 to the loving arms of Jesus Christ her Lord.

Evelyn was born in Wayne County on January 4, 1930 to the late Walter L. and Eunice Edwards Hinnant. She was married for 35 years to the late Paul Garris and for 31 years to the late J.B. Grant. Evelyn owned and operated Evelyn’s Drapery Nook in Goldsboro for over 25 years. Evelyn was an exceptional seamstress and enjoyed working with crafts, knitting, crocheting and painting. Her family will also remember her for the wonderful cooking she would do and for those famous chocolate pies.

Her warmth, generosity and kind spirit were well known and cherished by those she encountered throughout her life. A long-time member of New Hope Friends Church, Evelyn sang in the choir and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. She was a good friend, a great mother and had a generous heart. Evelyn provided a wonderful home for her family and even before the Lord called her home she wanted her whole family to know she loved them. She will be missed.

A service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at New Hope Friends Church. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the Family Life Center and other times at the home of Sherlene Mansfield. Interment will be on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in New Hope Friends Cemetery.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Sherlene Mansfield, Edsel Garris and wife Beverly, John Lee Garris, and Jeff Garris and wife Karen; grandchildren, Crystal Case (Tracy), Stephen Barnes (Rebecca), Eugene Garris (Melanie), Chris Garris (Britni), Timmy Garris (Amy), Christy Razim (Nate), Hayley Fly (Garrett) and Robert Garris; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her step-children, Phillip Grant and wife Patricia, Pam G. Edwards, and Dawn G. Walker and husband Timmy; and their extended families. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Hazel Daniels.
