Rachel “Rabbit” Winders Singleton Carlton, 90, long time resident of the Scott’s Store community, Mount Olive, and later, the Johnson Church area near Warsaw, passed away Monday morning, February 18, 2019 at Vidant Duplin Hospital. In recent times, she was cared for with love at the Parrish Family Care Home of Warsaw.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive with visitation afterwards. Burial will be Thursday, Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. The family is also receiving friends at the homes of Milton and Mary Singleton, and Phyllis and Milton Holmes. “Rabbit” as she was often called, was one of 13 children born to her late parents, Major and Nettie Thompson Winders. She was married to Johnny Milton “Gruff” Singleton and was a member of Long Ridge Free Will Baptist Church. After his death, she married Wade Carlton and became a member of Johnson’s Baptist Church of Warsaw. She had been employed in many capacities, from poultry farming to sewing factories to raising cat fish to selling Stanley Home Products.
She is survived by two sons, Milton Ray Singleton and wife, Mary, and Jerry Drew Singleton and wife, Carolyn, all of Mount Olive; a daughter, Phyllis S. Holmes and husband, Milton, of Mount Olive; a brother, J. L. Winders of Fla.; three sisters, Malina W. Kearney of Eureka, Geraldine W. Deaver and Annie Melba W. Thompson, both of Mount Olive; eight grandchildren, Edie Barfield, Christy Mobley, Greg Mobley, Nathan Singleton, Cassie Tyler, Drew 2 Singleton, Blake Singleton, and Lindsay Singleton; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her two husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Delmus “Omar” Singleton; three brothers; and five sisters.
