John William Gurley, 91, of Pikeville, was called home on Thursday, June 14, 2018 to the loving arms of Jesus Christ his Lord. The family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife, Peggy.
John William was born in Wayne County on September 25, 1926 to the late John Henry and Margaret Smith Gurley.
He was a devoted and hard-working farmer. John William enjoyed working the land and being atop one of his many tractors. He was deeply devoted to his family and was happiest when he was spending time with them. John William loved God and he was a long-time member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
John William loved life and the life he had with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his Tuesday night trips with Peggy to the TV station while Janice and Kenneth recorded their show. He enjoyed days of old and could often be found telling stories of times past.
A service to celebrate John William’s life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Teague officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday following the service and other times at his home. Interment will be on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. in the Gurley Family Cemetery at his home.
John William is survived by his; daughters, Donna Mozingo (Jim) and Terry Houston; grandchildren, Angel Webb (Jamie), Mandy Smith (Jamie), John Radford (Natalie), and Jamie Lynn O’Callahan (Ben); and great-grandchildren, Baillie, Madison, Morgan, Emily, Jake, Noah, Tylan, Gage, Jace, Layton, and Haven. He is also survived by his sister, Bernice Hinnant and brother, Jesse Ray Gurley (Ann).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Lancaster Gurley; a son, Johnny Gurley; great-granddaughter, Jaylee Grace O’Callahan; brothers, Thomas Gurley and Horace Gurley; and a son-in-law, Johnny James Radford.
