Neely Turner

Neely Turner passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC.

Neely was born in Cowpens, SC, to the late Claud D. Turner and Minnie Mae Hammett Turner. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Bowers Turner. Neely was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.

Neely was a veteran of World War II serving as a naval aviator, flying the PBM Mariner for search and rescue missions in the Pacific Theatre. He continued his military service after the war as a naval flight instructor and then joined the Army National Guard. He completed his military service in 1984, retiring as a Major.

Neely, a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, SC, was also employed as a supervising U.S. Probation Officer for the southern district of Georgia retiring in 1978. During that period of time, while living in Savannah, GA, he was a member of Sons of the American Revolution and the Chatham Artillery. He also served as a deacon at Southside Baptist Church.

A private committal will be held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston, GA. The family will gather at the cemetery for a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

Neely is survived by his daughters, Peggy SanFratello and husband, Angelo, of Mount Olive, NC, Beth Jarratt and husband, Jimmy, of Madison, MS, and Janet Shepard and husband, Steve, of Rutledge, GA; five grandchildren, Virginia SanFratello-Rael and husband, Ronald Rael, Shelley Kelly, Kate Shepard, Morgan Shepard, and James Jarratt; and six great-grandchildren, Bruce, Olivia, and Waett Kelly, Mattias Rael, Cilla and Caroline Sikes.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Turner, sister, Elsie Turner Ferguson, and brother-in-law, Robert Ferguson.
