Steve “Cigar” Allen Howell, 59, of Dudley, passed away suddenly on Saturday at Rex Hospital in Raleigh surrounded by his wife and children. He is survived by the love of his life, Leigh Ann Howell, of the home; his mama, Willie Mae McCloud of Dudley; two daughters, Amber Foss and her husband Brandon, of Mount Olive, and Rachel Howell, of the home; a son, John Howell of Dudley; two brothers, Elwood and Jeffery Matthews both of Dudley; and his beloved granddaughter, Lila Gray Foss; and his special K9 companion, “Ruger.”
A service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held on Wednesday evening, March 7, in the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home beginning at 7:00pm. Visitation will be during the hour prior to the funeral beginning at 6pm. Burial will take place on Thursday, at 12 noon, in the Eastern North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family is also receiving friends at the home on O’Berry Rd., Dudley. Flowers are welcome.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman, who loved life and his family dearly. After proudly serving his country in the Navy, he began his 30 year career with the department of Corrections. Following his retirement in 2012, Steve enjoyed spending time with his mama, hunting, fishing, and being with his family and friends.
