Willie J Britt, age 93, of Mount Olive, passed away peacefully at Wayne U.N.C. Healthcare on Friday, February 16, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born in Wayne County on February 26, 1924, to the late Charlie Livingston and Lillie Mae Capps Britt.
Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. A graveside service to celebrate this honorable and brave man will be held at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev Jim Whitfield officiating, immediately following visitation.
Mr. Britt is survived by his daughter, Sandra Britt Jones of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Britt Jones Byerley, her husband, Quent and their children, Win and Livingston Britt Byerley of Charlotte; Travis Lee Jones and his wife, Allison and their daughter, Lee Harper Jones of Charleston, SC; his daughter in law, Angela Britt and his twin grandsons, James Livingston Britt and John Whitfield Britt; his sisters, Edith Britt Costin; his brother, Cedric Britt and daughter, Robin Britt Caveness and husband, Joseph; Pearl, a long time special friend of the family, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Willie was predeceased by his wife, of 67 years, Sally Cleo Joyner Britt; his son, Jerry Uriah Britt; his sisters, Fannie Britt Jackson and Ruth Britt Daniels; and his brothers, Charlie June Britt, Carroll Britt, Hazel Britt Wiggins, Jim Britt, and Ruffin Britt.
As a young man, Mr. Britt served as a Rifleman in United States Army during WW II and was honorably discharged in 1946 at the conclusion of the war. During his service Willie received multiple honors including the EAME service medal with 2 Bronze stars given for heroic service displayed in a combat zone, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. In his 18 month campaign in France and Germany Mr. Britt was part of some of the most infamous battles, including the largest battle of the War, the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Britt did not discuss his service often, but when asked its significance was clear.
Willie J Britt was a loving daddy, uncle, brother, grandaddy, and great granddaddy on the farm.
