Allen Swindell Swinson, age 72, Dudley area resident, passed away Monday, September 25, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice in Goldsboro surrounded by his family.

Born November 8, 1944 in Dudley to the late Willis Henry Swinson, Jr. and Florrie Raynor Swinson, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, La Muriel Grady Swinson; his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jill Swinson of Clayton; his daughter and son-in-law, Shelly S. and Richard Proctor of Grantham; six grandchildren, Bryan Swinson, Meredith Best, Kevin Swinson, Katie Swinson, Abby Swinson, and Emma Proctor; a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Iris Swinson of Dudley; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn S. and Dick Cobb of Raleigh; another sister-in-law, Emily Swinson of Winterville; his mother-in-law, Cleo A. Grady of Grantham; La Muriel’s brother and sisters, and their families; and a loyal friend and caregiver, Bill Manuel of Dudley.

Along with his parents, he was preceeded in death by a brother, Royce Swinson;and his father-in-law, Roscoe Grady.

Allen was a member of Rhodes Friends Meeting. He graduated from Brogden High School and East Carolina University. He taught science and coached basketball and tennis at both James Kenan High School and Southern Wayne High School, for a total of 34 combined years. In addition, he also instructed hundreds of students in driver’s education training. He was truly an outdoorsman who loved running his dogs and participating in all types of sports.

The Swinson family will receive friends on Friday, September 29, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, and at other times at the residence. A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, September 30, at 11 a.m. at Rhodes Friends Meeting, 2177 O’Berry Road, Mount Olive. Pastor Carroll Overman will preside. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Rhodes Friends Meeting, c/o Morgan Davis, 102 Oak Tree Lane, Goldsboro, NC 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
