Barbara Matthews Scarbro

Barbara Matthews Scarbro, 78, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 1, 1939 to the late William and Mary Hamilton Matthews. Girl Scouts played an important role in Barbara’s life as she served many years as a leader. Barbara was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a dedicated and faithful servant her entire life.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1000 Eleventh Street, Goldsboro followed by a service to celebrate Barbara’s life at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary with Bishop Garry Waters presiding. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Layton Scarbro; daughter, Tammy Bauguess and husband Brien of Pikeville; sons, Darrell Shelton and wife Myra of Peru, David Shelton of Orlando, FL, and Dana Shelton of Fayetteville; and five grandchildren.

James Neal Casey

James Neal Casey, 69, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

Neal was born in Wayne County on July 30, 1948 to the late Sam C. Casey Jr. and Sarah W. Casey. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Neal was a partner in the family business, Wayne Hardwood Lumber and Arrington Chip, for over 50 years. He later worked with P&L Tractor in Goldsboro for 10 years. Neal loved life, his animals, collecting miniature John Deere and Farmall Tractors and going to gun shows. Neal would also travel far and wide to find a good find at a saw mill auction. Those of us who knew Neal weep at our loss, laugh with our remembrances, and reflect deeply on how much he meant to us. He made the world a healthier and happier place.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Neal’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.

Neal is survived by his wife of 36 years, Connie D. Casey; brother, Dennis P. Casey and his children, David Casey and Amie Casey. He is also survived by his nephew, Craig Byrd and wife Beth; a special nephew, Brandon Bond; his k-9 friend, Toby and cat, Polly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Byrd and niece, Kelly Byrd.

Violet Casey Ferrell

Violet Casey Ferrell, age 72, died Monday night at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Steele Casey and Hazel Davenport Casey and the wife of the late Robert Linwood Ferrell. She was a longtime hairdresser and member of Spring Creek Baptist Church.

Graveside Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Ferrell Family Cemetery with Pastor Jason Watford officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at her home.

Violet is survived by her sons, Ralph and Lisa Ferrell and Robert and Bobbie Jo Ferrell; her step mother, Lena Bruce Casey; her brother, Randall Casey; a special aunt, Dean Casey; her grandchildren, Bailey and Michael Layton, Bryant Ferrell, Stephanie Ferrell, Summer Ferrell, Alexis Ferrell and Destiny Pluff; and one great grandchild, Brody Layton.

John Joseph Zabriskie

John Joseph Zabriskie, 72, of Goldsboro, went to be with His Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 3:00 a.m. at Duke Medical Center surrounded by all his family who loved and adored him.

Born in Nash County, he was the son of the late Margaret Baines Pierce and John Jack Zabriskie. Joe graduated from Goldsboro High School in June 1965 and married his high school sweetheart Shirley Earp in September 1965. In 1966 he went into the United States Army and served in the intelligence field. Joe has past serve as deacon and Sunday School Superintendent in the Church of God of Prophecy for many years. Joe loved people and loved to make them laugh in any way he could. With his cheerful character he would always leave you with a smile. Joe was employed with Epes Transport for 17 years and was OTR Driver before retirement in 2012. Joe is presently a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro. He cherished and enjoyed so many friendships that had made such an impression on his heart.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, John Michael Zabriskie and wife Teri Havelka Zabriskie of Greenville, NC. Daughter, Kimberly Zabriskie Herring and husband Mark Camon Herring of Seven Springs, NC. Four Grandchildren, Ashley Hudson, Chase Zabriskie and wife Caroline Hasty Zabriskie, Joshua Zabriskie and Sierra Herring. Two great granddaughters, Makayla and Zaylie Casey.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 22nd at 7:00 pm at The First PH Church, Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro and burial service will be on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Wayne Memorial Park.

George Norwood Howell

George Norwood Howell, 92, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Born to the late Jarvis and Anna Ham Howell, Mr. Howell was a native of Wayne County. He attended Rosewood High School. He was a World War II Veteran where he served in the U.S. Army, 289th infantry. While in service, he received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, among other honors. He was proud to talk about his time in the Army, including many stories about chauffeuring General George Patton around. Following his military career, he was employed by J.M. Edgerton & Co. as a mechanic. He then became a farmer where he eventually retired. George was a hard-working man, this was the theme of his life; he lived to work. He was a member of Westwood United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held at Seymour Funeral Home on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 6-8 pm. Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 10 am.

Mr. Howell is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Lowrise Howell. He is survived by his two daughters Cheryl Davis (Rick) of Beaufort, N.C. and Vanessa May as well as two sons, Bruce Howell (Vickie) and Mike “Peanut” Howell (Thlanda) of Rosewood. He is also survived by one stepdaughter Mary Worrell (Paul) and one stepson Al Thompson (Rosa). Mr. Howell is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Todd Hood (Katie), Chad Howell (Heather), Brandon Hood (Katie), LeAnne Howell, Matthew Worrell (Ladonna), Patrick Thompson, Crystal Ellis (David), Alan Hines, Linzy Howell, Kyle Shelton, and Sidney King (Christopher). Mr Howell is also survived by his two sisters Dorothy Ham and Mattie Underwood and one brother Floyd Howell along with eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents his first wife, Carolyn Lancaster Howell, brothers, Jarvis B. Howell, Bobby Howell, Lloyd Howell, and infant twin sisters preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by stepson Elwood (Eddie) Thompson.

Betty Mae Thompson Elrod

Betty Mae Thompson Elrod, 89, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day at her home.

Betty was born in Emmanuel County, Georgia on February 3, 1928 to the late George Thompson, Jr. and Shellie Canady Thompson. Betty had a sparkle in her eye and a heartwarming, generous spirit, always making everyone feel at home. She lived a life of dedication to her family and friends, and to her community. Betty served her community many ways which includes: her volunteer work at Cherry Hospital, her service as a counselor with Wayne Domestic Violence, and as a charter member of the American Business Women’s Association. For her extensive work as a volunteer, she was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1983 and was also recognized by the ABWA as Woman of the Year, by the Goldsboro Jaycee’s as Woman of Year, and by Carolina Legal Services for her outstanding service. Her most significant role in life and what she did best was being a loving mother and friend to her daughter, Dale, who lived with her.

A service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2017 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Interment will be follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at their home.

Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack Elrod; sister, Imogene James of Virginia Beach, VA; and several nieces and nephews she loved very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Dale Elrod; brothers, Tyrus Thompson, Jim Thompson, Ralph Thompson, and Harley Thompson; and sister, Sarah Barfield.

Edward Louis Kornegay, age 68, died on Tuesday at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late John Louis Kornegay and Hilda Cox Kornegay. Ed was a member of Providence United Methodist Church where he served on various committees. He retired after 23 years of service, from the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corp with the rank of Captain. He was a registered civil engineer in the states of North Carolina and Florida. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Ed worked for several years as the in-house engineer with Jackson Builders until opening his own home office.

A service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jerry Jackson and Rev. Jim Huskins officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will greet friends Thursday from 10:00 until 11:00 am at the Providence Church Fellowship Hall and at other times at the home.

Ed is survived by his wife, Margaret W. Kornegay; his sisters, Frances K. and Glenn Brogden of Mt. Olive and Nancy K. and Mike Burton of Taylors, SC; several nieces and nephews; his special golfing buddies, Bob Guyse and Rudy Peedin; along with his special feline friend, Molly.

Allan Roscoe Sauls, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro with his family by his side.

 

Funeral service will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.  The family will receive friends following the service.  Graveside service will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

 

Mr. Sauls was a native of Wayne County born on May 31, 1946 to the late Willie and Jane Peacock Sauls.

 

He was a dedicated and faithful member of Fremont Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and many other capacities within the church.  Mr. Sauls was retired from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department where he served as Deputy Sheriff.  He was a lifetime member of the Fremont Rescue where he served as Captain for eight years and also served as President of the Wayne County Rescue Association. He was a member of the Fremont Fire Department; served as Northern Wayne Fire Protection District Commissioner and was a member of the Fremont Home Lodge #613 where has was a 32 Degree Mason.  Mr. Sauls loved Wayne County and was a true servant.  He was a people person and had a big heart full of love and would help anyone he could.  He will be missed.

 

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Patsy Harrell Sauls; one daughter, Julie Sauls Head and husband, Anthony of Fremont; one grandchild, Lindsey Head; his sister, Maidie Sauls Edwards and husband, Reuben of Seven Springs; his niece, Shawna Pelletier and husband, Dany of Lucama and nephew, Chris Edwards of Seven Springs and an aunt, Ade Lee Mitchell of Fremont.

Deborah Merritt Johnson, 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

Deborah was born in Durham County on August 4, 1948 to the late Earl White (Bud) Merritt and Mary Helon Pickett Merritt. She was a member of Spring Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro. Deborah was devoted to her church and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. She retired from child support services with the Wayne County Department of Social Services. Deborah enjoyed volunteering with the Wayne County Relay for Life as she fought her battle with cancer. Above all, Deborah loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her sons and precious grandchildren. She will be missed.

A graveside service to celebrate Deborah’s life will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont with Rev. Lewis Forsythe officiating. The family will greet friends Friday following the service at the cemetery and other times at their home.

Deborah is survived by her husband of 35 years, Dennis P. Johnson; sons, Christopher Hux and wife Esmeralda, Jason Hux and wife Tammy, and Patrick Hux and wife Ashley; grandchildren, Jordan Hux, Sydney Hux, Meagan Hux, Christopher Hill, Zoe Hux, Anna Hux, Joseph Hux, Kailynn Hux, Lukas Hux, Guillermo Moore, and Isaiah Moore; and her k-9 friends, Lennie and Squiggy. She is also survived by her sisters, Donna Merritt, Diedra Kleinert, and Diane Hill and husband Mark; and brother, David Merritt and wife Theresa.

Sara Brown Sasser, age 84, died Wednesday at Wayne UNC Health Care. Born in Princeton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence & Kizzie Braswell Brown. Retired from Southern Optical (American Optical) after over 30 years of service, she was an active member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 3:00 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Phillips, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Sasser is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph David “JD” Sasser; twin brothers, Ron Brown (Diane) and Don Brown (Pam); several nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Brown and her sister, Dorothy B. Fields.

The family will visit with friends and family on Sunday at 1:30 in the church fellowship hall.

Terry Lynn “Skippy” McLamb

Terry Lynn “Skippy” McLamb, 66, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.

Skippy was born in Durham County on January 22, 1951 to the late Annie Ruth Pearce. He had worked for many years as a truck driver. Skippy was a true sportsman, most comfortable outdoors, on the water or in the woods. He was a hunter of big and small game and loved walking in the woods and fields with his son. Skippy especially loved to go fishing and could often be found at the Outer Banks showing others where to find the best catch.

A service to celebrate Skippy’s life will be held on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Sugg officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home and other times at his home.

Skippy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn Whitley McLamb; son, Terry Lynn McLamb, Jr. and girlfriend, Michelle; grandson Zackary Oliver; brother, Randy McLamb and wife Jackie; nephews, Connor McLamb and Dillon McLamb; and great-niece, Sawyer McLamb. He is also survived by a special friend, Richard Howell.

Kathleen Caudill Parrish

Kathleen Caudill Parrish, 96, passed away on December 27, 2017.  Kathleen was born in Smethport, North Carolina on October 16, 1921.  She was the daughter of the late Howard and Bonnie Caudill.

 

She is survived by her loving family: son, Watts Bryan Parrish Jr. and wife, Sue; daughter, Bonnie Parrish Weldon and husband, Cled; two grandchildren, Kathy Parrish Nelson and husband, Bryce, and Bryan Parrish and wife, Ashley; three great-grandchildren, Rebecca Nelson, Reed Nelson and Owen Parrish; sisters-in-law, Carol Caudill and Martha Caudill; and many nieces and nephews who affectionately call her “Aunt Kat” and many loving extended family members.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Watts Bryan (Pete) Parrish, brothers, Jack Caudill and Howard Caudill and sister, Ruth Caudill Haggard.

 

Kathleen’ s childhood years were spent in Bluefield, West Virginia, Lake Wales, Florida and Durham, North Carolina.  She graduated from Hope Valley High School in Durham.  She attended nurses’ training school at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.  She married the love of her life, Pete, in Durham on March 7, 1942 just a few months after Pearl Harbor.  During WWII she and Pete lived in Mississippi, Wisconsin and Texas while he served in the Army Air Corps.  After the war, they returned to Durham where they were blessed with their son, Watts, Jr. and daughter, Bonnie.  In 1961, they moved to Goldsboro.  She taught kindergarten for St. Luke United Methodist Church, and also served as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant in the Goldsboro Public School System for many years.  After her husband passed away in 1987, she took many guided tours with various groups and traveled all over the US.  Kathleen and Pete were members of St.  Luke United Methodist Church since 1961.

 

Kathleen always enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and family.  She looked forward to the annual Caudill Family Reunion in Ashe County, N.C.  In 2004 she moved to The Pines of Goldsboro Assisted Living.  There she enjoyed the fun and fellowship of many new friends.

 

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 03, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends following the service.

Roy Thomas Renfrow, 88, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Roy was born in Sampson County on November 4, 1929 to the late Willie Anderson Renfrow and Mamie Harrison Renfrow. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard. Roy retired from the City of Goldsboro as the Chief of Police. Roy was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Sudan Temple of New Bern, and was a Shriner and Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a member of the Goldsboro Elks Lodge #139 B.P.O.E. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Roy was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate his life in the chapel with Rev. Randy Outland officiating. A private interment with military honors will be held at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Roy is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Mildred Swinson Renfrow; daughter, Debbie Leigh Robertson and husband Garry; daughter-in-law, Kathy Garrett Renfrow; four grandchildren, Kelly R. Mendez and husband Mark, Travis Pate and wife Susan, Garrett Renfrow, and Ronni Renfrow; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Thomas Renfrow; brothers, B. A. Renfrow and James Milton Renfrow; and sisters, Lillie Bradshaw, Dorothy Westbrook and Virginia Royal.

He leaves to cherish loving memories to his son, Aaron Grant of Philadelphia, PA; his siblings, Hilda Hack of Darby, PA, Regina Carlton and Darius Carlton (Marie) of Mt. Olive, Kea (Terrilynn) Carlton of Atlanta, GA and Eric Carlton of Baltimore, MD; a devoted cousin, Dorothy (Joe) King of Mt. Olive and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Helen Patterson Hinson, 86, of Mt. Olive passed away at her residence Sunday evening. She was the daughter of the late Walter James and Margaret Whitfield Patterson, and was the widow of Charles Brantley Hinson. Mrs. Hinson was a member of Outlaw’s Bridge Universalist Church and a retired hairdresser. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and a past president of the Mt. Olive American Legion Auxiliary.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Shumate-Faulk Memorial Chapel with Rev. Claudia Frost and Rev. Kevin Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, and at other times at the home place or at the residence of Valerie Owen or Charles Hinson Jr.

Mrs. Hinson is survived by a son, Charles Hinson Jr. and wife, Amy of Mt. Olive; three daughters, LaVeta Weatherington of Greenville, Regina Bright and husband, Manley of Pollocksville, and Valerie Owen and husband, Kenneth of Mt. Olive; a sister, Barbara Marquez and friend, Frank of Faison; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and her caregivers, Carrie Grady and Michelle Bennett.

Mrs. Hinson was preceded in death by a son, Cliff Weatherington; a sister, Shirley Kelly; and a great granddaughter, Lydia Strickland.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Beta Sigma Phi Preceptor Phi Chapter of Goldsboro, 497 Bowden Rd., Mt. Olive, NC 28365 or to the Albertson Community Library, 3763 NC 111 903 Hwy, Albertson, NC 28508.
