William Nick Swinson

Mr. William Nick Swinson, life long farmer of the Beautancus community, passed away Sunday morning, July 2, 2017 at his home at the age of 86.

His life will be remembered in a service to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Tyndall Funeral Home.  Officiating will be the Rev. Susan Wells and the Rev. Paul Rose.  Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will be at the home.  Burial will be Thursday, July 6, at 11 a.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Mr. Swinson had served in the United States Air Force, serving in Korea, and was a life time member of Stanford Presbyterian Church.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin Macon Swinson and Stella McArthur Swinson, and a sister, Edna S. Smith and husband Ray.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth “Lib” Bullock Swinson; a son and daughter-in-law, Vic and Teresa Swinson of the Beautancus community; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda S. and Casey Hash of Elk, Va., and Patricia S. and Chris Cipriani of Clayton; two grandchildren, Lee Swinson of the Beautancus community, and Katie Swinson of Kenansville; a great-grandson, Hogan Jernigan;  a sister, Gail S. Holland and husband, Kermit, of the Beautancus community; and a special friend, Bobby Best, also of Beautancus.

Doris Barwick Barfield, 93, of La Grange, peacefully passed away Monday, July 3, 2017. Doris was born June 2, 1924 in Lenoir County to the late John D. Barwick and Estelle Smith Barwick. Doris was wife to the late William Earl Barfield. Life for Doris revolved around her family and their happiness. She took great pride in being matriarch of her family and nothing was better to her than being a farmer’s wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. A true southern lady, her bright smile and warm hugs endeared her to everyone she came in contact with. Doris enjoyed tending to her yard and garden. Often times, the meals she prepared included the vegetables she had grown and canned. Her family has many fond memories of her cooking and the sweet smells coming from her kitchen. No one made a better pecan pie. In her happiest moments, Doris was surrounded by her loving family. A woman of strong faith, Doris was a longtime member of Wheat Swamp Christian Church. Her faith in Jesus and concern for others was exhibited in all areas of her life. Her life personified Proverbs 31.

A service to celebrate and honor Doris’ life will be held Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 6 p.m. from Wheat Swamp Christian Church. Graveside committal services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Doris is survived by four children, Jewel B. Wells and husband, Leon, Vickie B. Singleton and husband, Chris, Nancy B. Lee, and Bernie Barfield and wife, Kelly; ten grandchildren, Amy Lyerly and husband, Dwayne, Reagan Myers and husband, Jason, Burke Saunders and wife, Lock, Zac Singleton and wife, Beth, Paige McGovern and husband, Mac, Blake Saunders and wife, Liza, Ansley Hammond and husband, Brandon, Townson Wells, Peyton Barfield and Karsen Barfield; eleven great-grandchildren, Harrison, Ava Claire, Asher, Lucy, McNair, Myra Grace, Mackey, Hank, Quinn, Juniper and Theo. Doris was also preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Barfield; son-in-law, Bob Lee; and siblings, Ida Stallings, Mildred Letchworth, Jane White, John D. Barwick and Hardy Barwick.

Family and friends will be received Thursday following the memorial service and at other times they will be at the home of Bernie & Kelly Barfield, 1787 Holly Ridge Road, Kinston. Wilma Sue Allio Marlow, 60, of Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Somerset Court.
 
Wilma was born September 19, 1956 in Lenoir County to Wilbur Lawrence Allio and the late Reba Thomas Allio.  She was the wife of the late William David “Bill” Marlow, Jr.  Wilma had worked in childcare and her love and devotion for children was evident to all who knew her.  In her spare time she enjoyed making various crafts and crocheting.  Nothing was more important to Wilma than her family and friends, and she cherished every moment spent with them.  Wilma loved her Lord and Savior and worshiped at Sharon UMC in Kinston.
 
A memorial service to celebrate Wilma’s life will be held Friday, July 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at The Salvation Army Church in Kinston with Captain Curtis Kratz officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
 
Wilma is survived by her daughter, Adrianna Marie “Anna” Marlow and fiancee, Greg Jarman of Grifton; sister, Vickie Herring and husband, Art of La Grange; nieces, Rebecca Lane, Marsha House, and Ashley Elbanathy; nephew, Anthony Herring; God-son, Jailin Richardson; God-daughters, Ashli Richardson and Tiara Richardson; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Nell Rae McCullen Comer, 71, died Tuesday at Somerset Court of Goldsboro. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry McCullen and Mildred Brogden McCullen. Nell was a member of Brogden Chapel Church.
A funeral service will be held on Friday morning at Emmaus Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. Committal services will be held in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service, and at other times at the home of her son Jeral, 617 Pecan Rd., Dudley.

Mrs. Comer is survived by a daughter, Anne Marie Comer Davis and husband, Emmett of Goldsboro; a son, Jeral Lee Comer Jr. and wife, Sandra of Dudley; grandchildren, Charlie Comer, Bonnie Ann Phillips Gill, Sandy Ezzell, Adam McCullen Davis, Hannah Marie Davis, and Joseph-Tyler McCullen Davis; Brothers, Billy McCullen and Michael Brogden; sisters, Peggy Vanoster, Carolyn Strickland, and Kathy Smith; and great grandchildren, Preston Wayne Comer, Russell Gill, and Ryleigh on the way.

A brother, Joseph McCullen preceded her in death.

Delia Eatmon Creech, 91, formerly of Princeton, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Johnston Medical Center. She was born October, 17, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Gar and Ida Grice Eatmon. She was the widow of Herbert Hoover Creech. Mrs. Creech was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Princeton.

Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 am Friday, July 7th at Grace Baptist Church Cemetery in Princeton.

She is survived by son; Neal Creech of Spring Hope, daughter; Cherri Joette Creech of Irvine, California, brothers; Jollie Eatmon of Raleigh, Rayland Eatmon of Smithfield, niece; Velma Edwards of Princeton and one Grandchild; Olivia Nicole Creech.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

A private graveside service will be held at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.

 

Mr. Smith was born in Alabama on April 15, 1932 to the late Thomas and Pearlie Parrish Smith.

 

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of over 59 years, Mary Jones Smith; two sons; one daughter; one sister; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

M. Ray Watson

M. Ray Watson, 75, entered the gates of heaven after passing away at Rex Healthcare, on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, surrounded by his family after a brief period of declining health.

Born in Goldsboro, NC to the late Millard and Inez Womble Watson, he relocated to Clayton, NC.  Ray attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in School Administration.  Ray retired from Wayne County Public Schools after thirty years serving as principal of Belfast Elementary, Fremont Elementary, Brogden Elementary, Spring Creek K-9 and Dillard Middle Schools.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Seymour Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be held Monday, July 10th, 2017, at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Clay Parker officiating.

Ray is survived by his two daughters, Karen Watson Russo (Anthony) and Tracy Watson Stubblefield (Tom); his four grandchildren, Anthony Russo II, Nicholas Russo, Tori Stubblefield and Taylor Stubblefield; his former wife, Sue Price Bennett (David); his sister, Fay Rhodes (Danny) as well as several nieces and nephews.  Ray’s sister, Jean Game, passed away within hours of his death.

Joseph Paul Quinn, 80, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Brookdale Country Day Road after a courageous battle with cancer.

Joseph was born in Wayne County, NC on April 6, 1937 to the late Josiah Quinn and Margaret Rivenbark Quinn.  He was retired from Kemp Furniture Company.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Joseph’s life at 3:00 PM in the chapel with Rev. Barry House officiating.  Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive, NC.

Joseph is survived by his brothers, Louis Quinn of LaGrange and Ralph Quinn of Raleigh and several nieces and nephews.

The family will like to give a special thanks to Dr. Atkins and his staff for the care and compassion shown to Joseph during his illness.

Peggy Pierce Futrelle

Peggy Pierce Futrelle, 88, passed away Thursday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Peggy was born in Pender County, NC on April 20, 1929 to the late Walter McClure and Mamie Rivenbark Pierce. She was married to the late Walter R. Futrelle, Jr. Peggy was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro. She was retired as a receptionist from Cherry Hospital.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Wayne Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Peggy is survived by her son Lee Futrelle, III of Goldsboro.

Isom Woodrow Tucker, Jr., 69, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Isom was born in Wayne County, NC on February 29, 1948 to the late Marceline Stevens Tucker.  He was married to the late Janice Best.  Isom had worked as a truck driver with Goldsboro Iron and Metal.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 8, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Richard Toler officiating.

Isom is survived by his daughter, Christy Vinson and husband Brian of Goldsboro; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Everette and Rosie Best of Grantham; nieces, Denise Best Lupton and husband Doyle of Kenly and Linda Best Hedspeth and husband Bill of the Outer Banks; great nephew, Michael Saunders of Grantham and numerous cousins on the Stevens side of the family.

Coy Darwin Evans

July 7, 84, Mount Olive

Coy Darwin Evans, native of Magnolia and long-time resident of Mount Olive, passed away quietly early Friday morning, July 7, at his home.  He was 84 years old.

Along with a brother, John, he had owned and operated Evans of Mount Olive, Inc., a used car dealership, for many years.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and had a long tenure of service as Sunday school secretary.  For the Baptist men’s fellowship, he could always be counted on to have the coffee ready when the rest arrived.

His life will be remembered in a service to be held on Sunday, July 9, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive.  Dr. Dennis Atwood will officiate.  Interment will follow at Devotional Gardens at Warsaw.  The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at    1:30  p.m. at the Christian Life Center at  the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 239, Mount Olive NC 28365.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Dorothea Draughon Evans, of the home; two sons, Rickie Evans and wife, Lisa, of Wilmington, and Ronnie Evans of Dudley; two daughters, Patricia E. Rhew and husband, Robert, of Fuquay-Varina, and Tammy E. Vail and husband, Tom, of Goldsboro; eight grandchildren;   four  great-grandchildren; and a long-time business associate, William Quinn, who was more like a son than an employee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John William Evans and Bertha Batts Evans, and brothers, Stacey, Eldred, Wells, Ed, Wendell, Harold, and John Evans.

Mrs. Marie Vinson Smith, 73, passed away Thursday at Wayne UNC Heathcare
surrounded by her family. Marie was born in Lenoir County to the late Herman H. Vinson and Hazel Parrish Vinson. She was a lifetime member of Garris Chapel Methodist Church. Her life of dedication to her family was always demonstrated by her Christian love toward her family, especially to her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Granny Re”. One of her favorite pastimes was attending her grandchildren’s baseball games. Mrs. Marie was an avid outdoors lady who enjoyed farm life, and was an ardent UNC fan. Mrs. Smith was previously employed as plant manager for Blue Bell. For the past thirty-four years she was office manager for N. C. Salvage working side by side with her sister Sally Faye Herring, and her buddies and friends Charles “Tadpole” Daniels and Walter Ray Daniels. Together they helped to make N. C. Salvage one of the most successful recycling operations in the state. Mrs. Smith was well known for giving direction to employees and family, and she lived by the motto that she was always right until proven wrong.

A funeral service to celebrate Marie’s life will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 6 p.m. from Garris Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Adam Seate and Rev. Gabe Mitchell officiating. Interment will be Monday, July 10, 2017 at 10 a.m. from Fairview Cemetery.

Marie is survived by her husband, Lynwood “Buddy” Smith; daughters, Lynn Crumpler and husband, Jeff, and Lori Smith and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Jeffrey Crumpler and wife, Emily, Malori Price, and Carlyle Smith; sisters, Lou Ann Price and husband, Jake, Sally Faye Herring and husband, Elvin, Mary Cruse and husband, William Earl, Sheila Suggs, and Donna Smith and husband, Bob; brother, Jimmy Vinson and wife, Linda; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved church family and N.C. Salvage family.

Brinda Fay Thompson, 71, peacefully passed away Friday, July 7, 2017. Born in Lenoir County on December 18, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Thompson and Thelma Quinn Thompson. Brinda was a graduate of Moss Hill High Schoolin 1964 and Lenoir Community College. She was a dedicated and faithful member of Westside Free Will Baptist Church. Brinda had worked as a developmental technician at Caswell Center for nineteen years and later worked with BT’s Pet Sitting Service.

A service to celebrate Brinda’s life will be held Monday, July 10, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Daughtry and Rev. Frank Thigpen officiating. A graveside committal service will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park

Brinda is survived by her twin sister, Linda Page of Wilmington; brothers, A.C. Thompson of Kinston and Billy Thompson of Seven Springs; a special granddaughter, Evelyn Perez; special friends, Barbara Jenkins, Ernestine Sutton, JoAnne Carlyle, Helen Wiggins, Ella Bradshaw, and Sophie Wooten; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Avon Thompson and Bobby Thompson; and one of her special Caswell residents, William Majette.

Family and friends will be received Monday evening following the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of A.C. and Rachel Thompson, 131 Norma Drive, Kinston NC. Carolyn Jean Jackson Southerland, 68, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

 

Carolyn was born in Marlboro County, SC on June 2, 1949 to the late Legrand Jackson and Virginia Clark Jackson.  She was married to the late George Malcolm Southerland.  Carolyn retired from Wayne Memorial Hospital after twenty one years of service.  She was a member of Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Carolyn was a true Christian lady who loved God and lived each day showing those around her what faith in action is all about.  She will be greatly missed.

 

A service celebrating Carolyn’s life will be Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Heath officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service.  Interment will be Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Willow Dale Cemetery.

 

Carolyn is survived by her son, Malcolm Lee Southerland and wife Michelle of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Brittany Sigmon, Elijah Pendergrass, Brandon Canady, Tyler Canady and Holly Canady; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her husband and parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by sister, Mabel Jackson and her brothers, Arthur Lee Jackson, James Edward Jackson, William Henry Jackson and Rufus Jackson.

Edna Mae Coates Williams, 87, passed away Sunday at Willow Creek nursing home. She was born in Wayne county to the late Blaney F. and Roxy Faircloth Coates, and was married to the late Chester Graham Williams. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, having served as the primary class Sunday school teacher, and the young women’s program. She also served with the Relief Society.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Pollock and Bishop J. W. Bass officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 and following the service. A committal service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her sisters, Joyce Hardy and husband, Willie of Goldsboro and Joan Worley and husband, Ray of Princeton.

Mrs. Williams was also preceded in death by a son, Phillip Graham Williams; a brother, Blaney Franklin Williams; and sisters, Elizabeth Burroughs and Christine Anderson.
