Rex Franklin Bannister, 81, of Kinston, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the North Carolina State Veterans Home. Rex was born December 1, 1934 in Belton, South Carolina to the late Ben Bannister and Ellen Hand Bannister

A service to celebrate and honor the life of Rex Bannister will be held Sunday, November, 13, 2016 at 2 p.m. from Spilman Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Rex is survived by his wife of fifty six years, Jeannie Evans Bannister; five children, Bruce Bannister and wife, Vicki, Bryan Bannister and wife, Jennifer, Myra Cook, Bradley Ray Bannister, Gina Manning and husband, Tim; eight grandchildren, Dustin Bannister and wife, Danielle, Kevin Bannister, Joey Cooke, Hannah Cooke, Daniel Bannister, Parker Bannister, Jacob Bannister and Gavin Bannister; five brothers, Harold and wife, Louise, Gerald and wife, Carolyn, Ray and wife, Ruby Lee, Al and wife, Wanda, Doyle and wife, Linda.

Carolyn Sanders Howell, 78, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Carolyn was born in Wayne County on April 7, 1938 to the late Morgan and Kizzie Sanders. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Bobby Gray Howell. Carolyn had worked for over 30 years with Kemp Furniture Company and retired from the Cherry Hospital Farm Center in Goldsboro. She was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church and was a dedicated and faithful servant her entire life. She will be missed, but greatly remembered.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pikeville Cemetery with Rev. Walter Sloan officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

Carolyn is survived by her son, Ricky Howell and fiancée, Connie Olszyk of Pikeville; grandchildren, Patrick Howell and Courtney Howell; and sisters, Mary Uzzell of Princeton, Latitia Caprell of Raleigh and Joyce Gwaltney of Goldsboro. She is also survived by her special friend and traveling companion, Robert Fleming, and dear friend, Gail Rose.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Todd Howell; and brothers, Roy Sanders and Ralph Sanders.

Helen Holland Hooks, 82, of Pikeville passed away at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Rayford and Minnie Holland, and was the widow of Wayne D. Hooks. Mrs. Holland was retired from Borden Manufacturing.

A grave service will be held Sunday at 2:00pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Stancil officiating.

Mrs. Hooks is survived by a daughter, Faye Nelson of Pikeville and a grandson, John Allen Powell of Pikeville.

Frederic Merton Tubbs, Jr., age 72, died Wednesday morning at his home. Born in Norwich, Conn. he was the son of the late Frederic Merton and Marion Agnes Miller Tubbs and was the husband of Phyllis Tubbs of Goldsboro.

The family will celebrate Frederic’s life with a reception and visitation with friends at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home on Monday at 11:00 a.m.

Frederic retired as manager of Fun Products in Goldsboro and was a member of The American Motorcycle Association.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two brothers; Robert Nelson Tubbs and his wife Patty of Wilmington, N.C. and Lewis Tubbs and his wife Una of Florida, a sister; Doris Boisivert and husband Norman of Norwich, Conn., several nieces and nephews, and a special niece; Deborah Boisivert Martin of Plainfield, Conn.

Clayro Franklin “Frank” Jackson, age 69, died Saturday at Wake Medical Center. Born in Edgecombe County, he was the son of the late Clayro and Celestine Pate Jackson. Frank was a member of the Mill Creek Masonic Lodge #125 and was a Shriner. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America and was a former member of the Goldsboro Rescue Squad.
A service to celebrate Frank’s life will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm at Brownings United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends at the church immediately following the service.
Frank is survived by his wife, Judy P. Jackson; two daughters and sons in law, Page J. (Chris) Lane and Cynthia J. (Jamie) Woodcock; and seven grandchildren, Maison Woodcock, Zachry Woodcock, Kristen Lane, Elizabeth Grady, Clay Grady, Tyler Lane and Jackson Woodcock.

He is survived by his mother, Diane Pizano and husband, David of Pikeville; his father, Jaime Mendez Sanchez and wife, Sandra of Sparta, NC.; one daughter, Brianna Mendez of Maury, NC; four brothers, Francisco Mendez and girlfriend, Casandra, David Pizano, Jimmy Mendez and Jaime Rafael Mendez; five sisters, Monica Pizano and boyfriend, Samuel, Malika Pizano, Mary Mendez, Jennifer Mendez and Stephanie Mendez.

Mildred Williams Gray, 89, of La Grange, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2016. Mildred was born July 31, 1927 in Wayne County to the late Leon Williams and Agnes Chase Casey. Mildred’s husband of sixty six years, Robert “Red” Gray preceded her in death on July 18, 2010. She was also preceded in death by three children, Julia Gay, Jerry Gray and Eleanor Gray.

First and foremost to Mildred was her family. She was the consummate wife, mother and grandmother. Her life set an example for her family that will lead them all their lives. Mildred was a caring, loving parent and grandparent whose primary goal was the happiness and security of her family. She was a long time member of Walnut Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Mildred’s faith in Jesus and concern for others was exhibited in all she did. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own needs. Mildred lived a life of dedication to her family, friends, and community.

A service to celebrate and honor Mildred’s life will be held Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 2 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Tony McLamb and Rev. George Futrelle officiating. Burial will follow in the Gray Family Cemetery.

Mildred is survived by a son, Ronnie Gray and wife, Rachel; son-in-law, Bob Gay; eight grandchildren, Jason Ashley Gay, Jessica Gray Taylor, Kevin Hobbs Gray, Brooke Gray Kittrell, Melanie Gray Mays, Robbie Radford, Patrick Moore and Rob Moore; five great-grandchildren, Ainsley Taylor, Brynlee Taylor, Cheyenne Kittrell, Jaelyn Mays and Dakota Mays; and special family friends, Margie Holmes, Ben Rollins and Betty Rollins.

Marlene was born October 31, 1928 in Duplin County to the late Walter Powell and Alice Kornegay Powell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lee Aldridge, Jr.; and two brothers, Alton Powell and Carl Powell.

A lifelong homemaker and gifted seamstress, Marlene enjoyed time spent in her yard and garden.

A graveside service to honor Marlene’s life will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11 a.m. from Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Tony McLamb officiating.

Marlene is survived by her son, Marvin Lee “M.L.” Aldridge, III; two sisters, Shirley Rouse and Jean Stanford and husband, Alvin; brother, Dulan Powell; two grandchildren, Chad Aldridge and Steven Aldridge; three great-grandchildren, T.J., Tucker and John; and her beloved dog and companion, Sweet Thing.

Lois Saltzman Tillman, 80, of La Grange, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2016. Lois was born May 24, 1936 in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late Leonard Saltzman and Zetta Mae Early Price. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Tillman. Lois was a caring, loving parent and grandparent whose primary goal was the happiness and security of her family. Nothing was better than having the family gathered together at her home. Strong willed, determined and fiercely independent, Lois loved spending time in her yard. She loved tending to her flowers and fish pond. Lois would often put the needs of others before her own needs. A passionate lover of animals, Lois would take in any stray animal and love it unconditionally. As a military wife, she traveled all over the world and enjoyed collecting mementos from wherever she traveled. Lois loved telling stories about each piece she collected.

A service to celebrate and honor the life of Lois Tillman will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 7 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Mohn officiating. A committal service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park, Kinston.

Lois is survived by three daughters, Debbie Lipscomb and husband, Lenny, Gail Parker and husband, Danny, Phyllis Harper and husband, Randy; five grandchildren, Brittany Evans, Kali Hill and her husband, Travis, Carl Goodman, Amanda Rhodes and her fiancé, Jeremy Cheney and Zach Goodman and his wife, Amber; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sophie, Gage, Presley and Brinson; along with her beloved dog and companion, Charlie. In addition to her husband, Lois was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kristin Hardy.

Mr. Overton was born in Wayne County on June 15, 1938 to the late Willie Roy Overton and Nora Kelly Overton.    He was a member of Brogden Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Faye Overton; four sons, Jimmy Wayne Overton Jr. of Dudley, Terry Dana Overton and wife, Sandra of Pikeville, Caleb “C.C.” Overton of Albertson and wife, Phoebe and Dale Earnhart Overton of Dudley; one daughter, Kelly Michelle Barwick of Seven Springs; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren with one on the way.

 

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, November 16, 2016 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the residence.

Joyce Pender Taylor, 82, went to be with her Lord on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Joyce was born in Wayne County on April 18, 1934 to the late Leslie E. Pender and Lola Peele Hollowell Pender.  She was married to the late George Dexter Taylor.  For many years, Joyce enjoyed her work as a hairdresser at Kirkwood Retirement Village.  She was a long time member of Oakland Community Church. Joyce was devoted to her church, sang in the choir, and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God.

A service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Oakland Community Church.   Entombment will be Friday at 11:00 a.m in the mausoleum at Wayne Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Joyce is survived by her sons, Jerry L. Dawson and wife Wanda of Pikeville, Stan Dawson of Rosewood, and Tim Taylor and wife Tracey of Selma; and 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Ellen P. Ham of Rosewood, Betty Gray P. Allen of Smithfield as well as her nieces and nephews .

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Bernese P. Hill.

Bernice A. Phillips

Bernice A. Phillips, 88, peacefully passed away Tuesday, November 15, at his home surrounded by his family.

A service celebrating Bernice’s life will be held Thursday, November 17, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill FWB Church with the Reverend Sherman Dilly and the Reverend Bill Rose officiating.  The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 12:30-2:00, and, at other times at the home of John and Susan Peacock, 207 Friendswood Drive, Goldsboro.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Bernice was born in Johnston County April 14, 1928, one of nine children, to the late Alphonso Phillips and Cora Pilkington Phillips.  He graduated from Rosewood High School. On April 6, 1951, he married his one true love, Louise Berry, and they have celebrated 65 years of marriage together.

Bernice proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Panmunjom within the demilitarized zone.

After being introduced to the dairy business just after graduating high school, he discovered his first and favorite occupation working at Wayne Dairy, later known as Coble Dairy, where he retired with more than 40 years of devoted service as the Plant Maintenance Engineer.

Bernice was a devout and dedicated Christian and lived everyday serving the Lord and exemplified a true Christian attitude.  He was an active member of Pleasant Hill FWB Church.

He was a long time member of Neuse Lodge #6 Odd Fellows Fraternity and Home Rebekah Lodge #106.

Bernice was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  In addition to his wife, Bernice is survived by his daughter, Susan Phillips Peacock and husband John, and their sons Jonathan Phillip, Benjamin David, and Aedan Michael.  His grandsons were the apple of his eye and he thoroughly enjoyed being their Poppy.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marie Phillips, Lu Little and husband Bill, Julia Crumpler, Margaret Radford and husband Maurice, Louvene Berry, and numerous nieces and nephews that fondly referred to him as Uncle Bunny Rabbit.

Bernice was preceded in death by his parents, his son Bernie Wayne Phillips, and his siblings Mildred Ingram, Lebert Phillips, Myrtle Grady, Beulah “Skip” Spears, Janice Twiggs, Edward Phillips, Needham Gary Phillips, and Glenn Phillips.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his caregivers Randel Garrison and the staff at Community Home Care & Hospice for the loving care and support provided during his illness.
