George Benton Butts, Jr., 80, of Goldsboro, peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016. George was born September 2, 1936 in Wayne County to the late George Benton Butts and Grace Vinson Butts. George was an active member of Jason Presbyterian Church and retired from E.I. Dupont following thirty four years of service. George was truly a kid at heart. With a sure, confident voice and a smile that was infectious, George had a way of connecting with people, especially children. George possessed a way of making everyone feel special and quickly adopted people into his family circle. He loved life and the many blessings life offered. George enjoyed being out in the country, loved a good show or musical and especially loved spending Sunday afternoons watching a good ole NASCAR race.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor George’s life will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 3 p.m. from the Mewborn Family Cemetery with Scott Hardy officiating.

George is survived by his wife and best friend of sixty one years, Loretta Mewborn Butts; sister, Rose Butts Champlain; a great-nephew George thought of as a son, Hunter Reese; a niece George thought of like a sister, Vickie Corbett; along with a large extended family George truly loved. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Dean Butts; and two siblings, Jean Walker and Archie Ray Butts.

George’s family will receive friends Thursday following the graveside memorial service and at other times they will be at the home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Samuel Henry Merriweathers, 72, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Samuel was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Merriweathers of Goldsboro.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ernestine Smith Merriweathers Uzzell and husband, Jesse Lee Uzzell of Durham.

In keeping with Samuel’s wishes, there will not be a wake, funeral or memorial.

Mildred Irene Williams Anderson, 84, passed away early on Sunday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center with her grandson, Ashley Carter at her bed side.

 

Mildred was born in Wayne County on March 21, 1932 to the late Floyd Daniel Williams and Daisy Mae Williamson Williams.  She was a member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for over 30 years.  Mildred was employed with Bellsouth, G.E. Plant and retired from Wayne Memorial Hospital in 1998 with 25 years of service, all in Goldsboro.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Teague officiating.  Interment will be Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Grants Chapel Church Cemetery on Hwy. 55 in Mount Olive.  The family will greet friends Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home immediately following the service.

 

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Marsha Jester and husband Bond of Pikeville and Patricia Head of Aiken, SC; her grandchildren, Chad Head of Aiken, SC, Ashley Carter and wife Karla of Goldsboro, Christina Penny and husband Brian of Murfreesboro, TN, Melissa Johnson and husband Jay of Williston, SC, and Amanda Cline and husband Brandon of Goldsboro; and great-grandchildren, Ashton and Elizabeth Carter, Samantha, Zachary, and Chloe Penny, Kaylee Noggle, Bella Head, Matthew Waters, and Colton Cline.  She is also survived by her sisters, Lucille Rouse and husband Buster of Shawnee, KS, Ruth Montague of King, Doris Lupton and husband Glenn of Mount Olive, and Diane Bissette and husband Tracy of Pikeville.  Mildred also had many special nieces and nephews and their children.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, George Howard Anderson, Jr., sister, Mary Athelean Anderson, and son-in-law, Bobby Lee Head.

 

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Woods Grove P.F.W.B Church at 4009 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.

Gary Daniel “Danny” Jackson, age 64, died early Wednesday morning at his residence. Born in Greene County, he was the son of the late Robert Lynyard Jackson and Margaret Thompson Jackson. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Tommy Jackson and Johnny Jackson and his sisters, Evelyn Jackson and Dixie Taylor. Danny was the Owner of Circle “J” Stables and a Veteran of the U.S. Army.
A service to celebrate Danny’s life will be held Saturday, October 22nd at 2:00 pm at Emmaus Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Willoughby and Rev. Ralph Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family members will greet friends Friday night from 6:00 until 8:00 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Danny is survived by his wife, Carroll Jackson; a daughter, Tabatha Williams; two sons, Gary Jackson and Chris Jackson; two brothers, Scott Jackson and Steve Jackson; a sister, Myra Holland; and four grandchildren, Gary Daniel Jackson, III, Madison Danielle Williams, Zoey Brie Jackson and Carson James Jackson.

Sara Brewer Rouse, 80, of Kinston, peacefully passed away early Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Sara was born September 23, 1936 in Tarboro to the late Joseph and Minnie Brewer. Following high school graduation, Sara moved to Kinston to study as a lab technician. While in school Sara met the love of her life, Nelson Kaye Rouse. They shared more than thirty five years together in Kinston and raised three sons, John Kyle Rouse, Lance Kelly Rouse and Lyndon Townes Rouse. Sara retired from the Lenoir County Health Department where she worked as a lab technician.

Sara was the consummate wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. One could never enter her home unwelcome and could never leave her presence hungry. There was no limit to her generosity and love for others. Through her strong faith she taught us how to live, but more importantly she taught us how to give.

A service to celebrate and honor Sara’s life will be held Monday, October 17, 2016 at 11 a.m from Rouse Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Sara is survived by a son, Lance Kelly Rouse; four grandchildren, John Kyle Rouse, Paige Rouse Sammons, Tyler Jackson Rouse, and Holly Kaye Rouse; a great-granddaughter, Palyn Elizabeth Sammons; brother, Kenneth Brewer and wife, Mary, along with their sons, Kenneth Brewer Jr, Lane Brewer and Steven Brewer.

Sara’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sara’s dear friends and her caregivers, Patty Shepherd, Kennedy Lawson and Maurice Brown.

Ethleen Brown Larkin, 88, of La Grange and formerly of Raleigh, quietly passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Ethleen was born June 13, 1928 in Gatesville to the late Bryant and Blanche Brown.

Ethleen graduated from Hardbarger Business College and embarked on a career with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission that spanned fifty six years. In 1998, Ethleen was recognized with the North Carolina Richard Caswell Award in recognition of fifty plus years of service to the state of North Carolina. The NC Employment Security Commission declared October 1, 2002 as Ethleen Larkin Day and also established an award in her honor to recognize employees annually for outstanding service. On June 30, 2008 then Governor Mike Easley presented Ethleen with the Order Of The Long Leaf Pine. One of North Carolina’s most prestigious awards, this award recognizes individuals who have provided exemplary service to the state for more than thirty years. Hard work personified Ethleen’s life. Lovingly devoted to her family, Ethleen worked tirelessly to raise and provide the best for her two children. She was a passionate fan of North Carolina State basketball.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor Ethleen’s life will be held Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 2 p.m. from Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Brad Mitchell officiating.

Ethleen is survived by her daughter, Michelle Whitfield and husband, Dwayne; daughter-in-law, Debbie Wellington; two grandchildren, Jason Wellington and wife, Laura and Brock Wellington and wife, Theresa; two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Betsy Wellington; sister, Reba Woodard and husband, Norman; along with a special friend and caregiver, Pat Skinner. In addition to her parents, Ethleen was preceded in death by her son, Carl Wellington; and a sister, Mary Burgess.

Jimmy worked as a electrical inspector with Wayne County and retired with more than twenty seven years of service. Jimmy was one who willingly gave his opinion. He enjoyed good conversation, good food and his Pall Mall cigarettes.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor Jimmy’s life will be held Monday, October 17, 2016 at 2 p.m. from Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Gabe Mitchell officiating.

Keiko Narita Ruggles

Keiko Narita Ruggles, formally of Goldsboro, died peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning, October 14, 2016. She was born in Aomori Prefecture, Japan on October 29, 1929.  After her children were born, she moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen in 1966.  In 1982, Ms. Ruggles opened her business, Kay’s Alterations in Piccadilly Square before later relocating to its final destination on Berkeley Boulevard.  She also sold Mary Kay Cosmetics.

 

Kay, as she was affectionately called, was known in the community for her outgoing personality and her love of her family. Her grandchildren called her “Bachan”.  She was an avid Atlanta Braves and sports fan.  Kay prided herself on her immaculate garden and pristine flowerbeds and yard.

 

She is survived by two children, daughter Emerie Combs and husband Gerald Combs of Nahunta and son David Ruggles and wife Debbie Ruggles of Hilton Head, SC. She also has five grandchildren, Angela Blake and husband Christopher Blake currently residing in Italy, Joshua Combs and Lynzie Vice of Nahunta, Trevor Ruggles of Fuquay-Varina, Russell Combs of Reidsville, and Jacob Ruggles of Raleigh.  She has one great-grandchild, Logan Heath currently residing in Italy with his parents.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Japan.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother, of Japan.

 

In keeping with Kay’s wishes, there will be no wake, service or memorial. In remembrance of Kay and her battle, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of North Carolina via their website www.alz.org/nc or send donations to Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Marie was born in Liverpool, England on August 26, 1929 to the late Stanley and Mary Schofield Quinn.  She was married to the late Marvin Scott Garner.  Marie was a professional soloist.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 12:00 PM -1:00 PM at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Marie’s life at 1:00 PM in the chapel.  Father Alex Gonzalez will officiate.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Marie is survived by her sister, Monica Glandt of Palms Springs, CA and a nephew, Paul R. Robinson of Lancaster, CA.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Julia P. Johnson.
