Arthur Carlton Frederick, 88, left this world to be with Jesus Friday morning. Carlton was a beloved husband, father, Papa and friend whose love for life and others was apparent to all who met him.
Carlton was born in Alamance County on January 2, 1929 to the late John and Annie Bell Frederick. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Josephine Jackson Frederick. As a boy, Carlton was often heard on the radio singing with his brothers, sister, father or mother. This love and talent for music carried him through his life as part of The Frederick Brothers quartet. The foursome has sung worldwide. They had received many awards including the Robert B. Jamieson Award with NCHSAA in 2001.
Along with his brother Bob, Carlton owned and operated Frederick’s Music in Goldsboro. It was their love of music that prompted them to open their music store in 1960. And for over 54 years, Frederick’s Music was Goldsboro’s first stop for pianos and organs, as well as for quality instruments, lessons and services. Carlton had also served as the choir director of St. Paul United Methodist Church and as the interim choir director of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church as well as being the founding member of the Men of Madison Choral Group.
Carlton will be remembered for his musical accomplishments that include USO concerts for troops stationed in foreign countries and concerts at the Pentagon, making a chart-recognized record with Columbia Records and for performing at the well-known Crystal Cathedral.
While music was important to Carlton, he was also a skilled athlete in football, baseball and basketball, and followed the family talent as an accomplished sprinter. After moving to Goldsboro with his family as a young man, Carlton started his high school career at Goldsboro High School in 1944 where he was a leader on the football and baseball field. Carlton chose to attend college over signing a professional baseball contract with a bonus. He earned various sports scholarships, accepting a football scholarship at the University of North Carolina. Later Carlton was inducted in the Goldsboro High School Hall of Fame.
Carlton loved Madison Avenue Baptist Church and was a dedicated and faithful servant his entire life. He was a very strong believer in Jesus Christ. His faith gave him the courage to face anything in life. Most important to Carlton was his family. Carlton worked so hard to make sure his wife and children were well taken care of. He was the best daddy who will be truly missed.
He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. Carlton served his community in many ways, including working as member of the Board of Alderman of Goldsboro and as Mayor Pro Tem of Goldsboro.
A service to celebrate Carlton’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017at Madison Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.
Carlton is survived by his children, Rick Frederick and wife, Lee, Julia Harris and husband, Bill, Kathy Winslow and husband, Will, and David Frederick and girlfriend, Liz Brownstead; fourteen grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Bob Frederick and wife, Joyce of Goldsboro, Donnie Frederick and wife, Della of Goldsboro; sister, Linda Robinson and husband, Joe; and several nieces and nephews he loved very much.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Frederick.
