Mary Edith Hollingsworth Rouse, 93, peacefully passed away Thursday, July 20, surrounded by family. Mary Edith was born September 23, 1923 in Wayne County to the late Dollie Measley Hollingsworth and Willie Raymond Hollingsworth.
Mary Edith graduated from La Grange High School, and then East Carolina Teacher’s College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work in 1945. She completed one year post-graduate work from UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a Masters Degree. In 1946 she began a 31 year career as Caseworker for the blind with the Department of Social Services in Kinston. Her devotion to this job was partially a result of her being visually impaired at a young age. She was a former member of La Grange Garden Club. Prior to her death, she was the oldest member of La Grange Christian Church. In 2009, Mary Edith moved to Cypress Glen Methodist Retirement Center where she reunited with many old and dear friends. She also made many new friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Talmadge Rouse, and a brother, Fletcher Hollingsworth.
Mary Edith is survived by her son Ray Rouse, and wife, Terrie; grandson, Cameron Rouse; special cousins Jill, Jimmy and Jason Boone; Neal and John Roberts; and a special friend, Sam Myers.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.. Visitation will follow the service.
