December 18, 99, La Grange

Evelyn Byrd Sugg, 99, of La Grange, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016. Evelyn was born February 2, 1917 in Lenoir County to the late George and Alice Fields Byrd. She was a 1935 graduate of Wheat Swamp High School. Evelyn then attended Pittsburgh School of the Fine Arts where she studied Fashion Design. She returned to North Carolina in 1940 and married her husband, Norman Sugg. They were married for seventy-one years until his death in 2011.

Norman and Evelyn farmed in the Jason Community for many years. They worked hard and loved to travel in their spare time. Whether close or far, she loved spending time with friends and family experiencing new places. When she was not traveling, she enjoyed shopping and was excited to find the latest trends for the upcoming year. She also loved to alter or create new items to wear. A true Southern lady, Evelyn was very creative and always found a way to make things work. Evelyn was a member of Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church.

Evelyn is survived by three sons, Ronald and wife, Olia Lee of La Grange and their daughter, Rondi Sugg Smith and husband, Jay of Goldsboro, Roger and wife, Margaret of Plymouth and their daughter, Sarah of Raleigh, Dr. Keith Sugg and wife, Ann of Winston-Salem and their children, Phillip and wife, Maeve of Chicago, David of Santa Cruz, CA, Elizabeth of Roanoke, VA, and Alex of Brooklyn, New York; two siblings, George Byrd of La Grange and Alice Cerasia of Passaic, NJ. In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by brothers, Jennings, Rudolph, and Kenneth; and sisters, Vera Baker and Frances Harrison.

A service to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Grubbs officiating. A time of fellowship and visitation will follow the service. Burial will then follow at Fairview Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Hull Road Free Will Baptist Church, 3984 Hull Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
