Charles Lawson Snipes, Jr died peacefully at home the night of October 4, 2016. He was born August 30, 1935 in Durham to the late Ina and Charles Lawson Snipes of Wilmington who predeceased him.
Charles is survived by his wife Lu Jones Snipes of the home, son Chuck and wife Jana of Goldsboro, daughter Donna Snipes Schoettmer of Dallas, Texas and his 3 grandsons, Stephen Schoettmer of Birmingham, Alabama, Jeff Schoettmer and Michael Schoettmer of Dallas. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Don and Billie Stallings of Rocky Mount, nephew Herb Evans and wife Jessica and their sons Connor and Edward.
He graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington in 1953, Wake Forest University in 1957, and Wake Forest School of Law in 1960. He and his wife bought the Ford dealership in Goldsboro in 1961 which he operated, joined by his son, for 40 years.
Charles served on the boards of the Carolina Ford Dealers Advertising Fund, the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, the Wake Forest Deacon Club, Wayne Country Day School and as chairman of the capital campaign there. He also served as president of the Goldsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, the Goldsboro Industrial Committee of 100, and president of the board of Walnut Creek Country Club.
Charles is a trustee emeritus of Wake Forest University where he spent many happy week-ends both home and away enjoying WF football with friends later watching WF baseball where his oldest grandson Stephen played. For the past 5 years UNC football, however, has had a special place in his heart as he watched his middle grandson Jeff play linebacker there.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at the home 214 Ridgewood Drive. A memorial service will be held at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Goldsboro at 11:00 am on Friday.
