George Walter Hogge, III, 83, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at The Lodge at Wake Forest.
George was born in Washington, DC on March 19, 1937, to the late Dr. George Walter Hogge, Jr. and Elizabeth McVearry Hogge. He was married to the late Patricia Still Hogge of fifty-one and a half years. George retired from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant with twenty-four years of service. He was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church.
A graveside service for the family will be held on Monday at Wayne Memorial Park with military honors rendered by the United States Air Force.
While at Lowry A.F.B., CO, in 1956, he was the winning pitcher in the A.F. World Series that brought the title to the base. He also met his wife while stationed there. In 1959, George was offered a baseball contract by the St. Louis Cardinals but decided to make the Air Force a career.
While on active duty he had overseas tours in Turkey, Thailand and Spain. He took state side tours in Colorado, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Mississippi, Washington, Utah and Montana. In 1979, he retired at Seymour Johnson A.F.B. His decorations and medals include the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Force Longevity with five oak leaf clusters and Small Arms Expert Medal.
He also retired after 36 years of officiating high school sports. He officiated the East-West All-Star Football Game; the State 1A Softball Championship; the Eastern Championship in volleyball; the numerous football and basketball conference playoffs.
George is survived by his sons, George Walter Hogge, IV and wife, Bonnie of Wake Forest, NC and Michael Ryon Hogge and wife, Donna of Carolina Beach; his grandchildren; George Walter Hogge, V (Quint) and wife Caitlin, Lindsey Fath and husband John, Michael Ryon Hogge, II and fiancée, Karrie Keen, and Matthew Robert Hogge and wife Carla; great-grandchildren, Austin, Truman, London, and Olivia; and his sister-in-law, Rita Hogge of La Plata, Maryland.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Lawrence Hogge and Vincent Hogge.
