Olga Markowitsch, age 93, died on December 13, 2019, at Willow Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient since April 2019, in Goldsboro, NC. Olga was born on October 5, 1926 in Bela Crkva (White Church), Yugoslavia to Milosaw and Mathilda Markowitsch. In 1949 Olga and her parents emigrated to the United States of America and settled in Detroit, Michigan. There Olga attended nursing school at Henry Ford Hospital. Two years later she joined the United States Air Force. Olga served at Bitburg, Germany, and the Philippines, where she contracted tuberculosis. After surgery and recuperation, she was stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base near Detroit, in Wiesbaden Germany, and Lafes Field in the Azore Islands, among other tours of duty.
Olga retired from the USAF with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She then established herself in Goldsboro for the rest of her life.
Olga was predeceased by her parents and her brother Anton Markowitsch. She is survived by one son Paul Markowitsch and one grandchild, Emily Markowitsch. She also leaves her daughter-in-law Abigail Markowitsch and special friends Karen and Patrick Cooper and family.
Olga was a member of both St. Michael Chapel on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Goldsboro, where she served many years as a lector and sacristan. She lived her faith with an enthusiasm that touched many people, all of whom received her standard greeting of kisses on both cheeks, “the way they do it in Russia.”
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Goldsboro, NC, on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with interment at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery to follow.
The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
