September 10, 90, donnie-mayo

On Saturday evening , September 10, 2016 Donnie passed away peacefully at her home and moved on to her Heavenly home.  Donnie was passionate about her family and was a fine example for her family that will guide them throughout their lives.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating Donnie’s life at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Dr. J. Michael Collier officiating.  Interment will conclude the service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Donnie was born in Johnston County to the late Gurney Lee and Hazel Wiggs Evans but moved around age four to the Rosewood community on the family farm, where she lived her entire life.  She was a hard worker on the family farm and started her young career in the meat department of the A & P Grocery Stores on Ash Street and later retired from the Kinston Plaza location after many years of service.  She was a true caregiver and helped raise many of us “youngins.”  She made the best cheeseburgers, fried chicken, okra, salmon patties and home cooked vegetables.  Donnie loved to travel and took many people on her trips.  She loved Hawaii, Elvis, Atlanta Braves Baseball, and she especially loved animals.  She loved to birdwatch in her yard, and her azaleas, hibiscus, roses, and giving plants from her yard.

Donnie was a strong willed Christian woman and member of Rosewood First Baptist Church where she loved her church family.

Donnie is preceded in death by her daughter, Connie E. Parnell, her son, Ronnie Steve Mayo Sr. and is survived by her daughter, Pat M. Smith (Len) of Emerald Isle, NC; and her sisters, Janie E. Jackson (Bill) and Linda E. Kornegay (Bobby).

Donnie is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Sherrie S. Rhodes (Ben), Todd Smith (Stephanie), Ronnie Mayo Jr. (Christie), Carol M. Henn (Brian), Charlotte M. May (John), Tonya P. Riggs and Samantha Mayo; She is also survived by her 19 great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Zachary and Meredith Rhodes, Ashley, Madison and Hunter Smith, Brooke, Blake, Danielle and Charles Mayo, Victoria, Angeleana, Dawson and Joelia Henn, Scott and Jacob May, and Emily, Justin and Gavin Riggs.  She has one great-great-grandchild, Sophia.

She is also survived by nephews and niece, Stuart, Michael and Jeffrey Kornegay, Amelia J. Humphrey and David Jackson and their families, and her special youngins, Mary Katherine Gurganus and Kourtney Humphrey.

Most especially she leaves behind her beloved dog, Mitsi and her bird, Petey whom she adored.

Donnie was a true blessing to her family and we all knew she loved us greatly.  She will truly be missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be given to the Wayne County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 821, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
