Mary Verna Merritt Scott, 86, died peacefully Saturday at her home. A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late William N. and Gulie Braswell Merritt. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, the Samaritan Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women for sixty-five years. She was a member and officer of Goldsboro Chapter #54 O. E. S., Wayne County Shrinettes, and served as a volunteer at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her most beloved honor was loving her family.
A service to celebrate her life will be 2PM Monday at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Jackson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1PM until 2PM in the church fellowship hall. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband of sixty-five years, Rodney G. Scott, Sr.; son, Rodney G. Scott, Jr. of Goldsboro and his wife Terry; daughters, Peggy Scott Smith and husband Randy of Charlotte and Amy Scott Elks and husband Mike of Nashville, N. C.;; sisters, Frances Crumpler and husband Billy, Elizabeth Dudley, and Sara Sewell and husband Charles all of Goldsboro; brothers, Clifton Merritt and wife Martha of Mt. Olive, Ray Merritt of Goldsboro, and Howard Merritt and wife Diane of Rosewood; daughter-in-law, Susan Scott of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Scottie Joyce, Jesse Strong, Katie Strong, Sean Smith, Sarah Strickland, Kim Weber, and Kyle Scott; seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son R. Douglas Scott and a brother William (Bill) Merritt.
