April 30, 94, Mount Olive

Mrs. Jean Andrews Herring, life long resident of Mount Olive, passed away Tuesday morning, April 30, 2019 at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 94 years of age.

Born in Mount Olive, she was the daughter of the late Allen B. Andrews and Sadie Loftin Andrews. A life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive, it was there that she was baptized at a young age. She had been a member of the church choir, and was active in many other church functions through the years. Also to note, she was an avid bridge player, an excellent cook, had a great sense of humor, enjoyed talking, and had the sharpest mental faculties right until the end. She was proud of the fact of being independent, having lived alone and tending to her own affairs.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond M. Herring; a son-in-law, Gene Carter; a brother, Ray Clark Andrews; and a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Arneson.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan H. and Dick Murphy of Highlands, NC, and Sandy H. Carter of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Susan Kermon of Chapel Hill, and Melissa Winfree and husband, Shawn, of Greensboro; and a great-granddaughter, Carter Elizabeth Winfree of Greensboro. She is also survived by Patti Spurgeon Turner and her husband, Milford, and daughter, Katelynn Morgan. Patti was a dear friend who was more like a daughter, and Katelynn, a granddaughter.

In addition, she is survived by a special friend, Jay Hines; several nieces and nephews with their families, and numerous cousins..

Funeral services will be Friday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home with Dr. H. Dennis Draper, Jr. and the Rev. Michael Binger officiating. A private interment will follow. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday night, May 2, from 7 until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, it was Mrs. Herring’s request that memorial gifts be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605, or First United Methodist Church, PO Box 420, Mount Olive, NC 28365.
