Shelton Hardy Dawson, 80, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. Shelton was a warrior and he fought for his life until the last minute. He lost his life after a courageous battle with cancer.
Shelton was born in Wayne County on August 21, 1938 to the late Joseph Benjamin Dawson and Beatrice Head Dawson. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 25 years, Minnie Price Dawson. Shelton proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He worked for many years as a vocational education teacher with Wayne County Public Schools. Shelton enjoyed classic cars, going to car shows, watching NASCAR racing, and collecting Harkers Island decoys. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be missed.
A service to celebrate Shelton’s life will be held by the graveside at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the cemetery and other times at his home.
Shelton is survived by his fiancée, Faye Taylor; daughters, Cindy Jackson and husband Jay of Goldsboro and Christie Wiggins and husband Mike of Goldsboro; son, Michael Dawson and wife Robin of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Kari Jackson Vail and husband Blake, Caraleigh Mitchell and husband Ryan, Michael Wiggins, Molly Jackson, Aleeze Dawson and Merritt Dawson; and two great-grandchildren, Conleigh Mitchell and Celia Mitchell. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Pope of Goldsboro and his k-9 friend, Rowdy.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant great-grandson, Jack Darwin Vail.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in Shelton’s memory to Victory Junction, 4500 Adams Way, Randleman, NC 27317 or to Community Home Care and Hospice, 2309 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Community Hospice for the love and care they provided for Shelton during his final days. Simple words cannot express our gratitude. Also a thank you to his doctor, Dr. Samer S. Kasbari and the staff of Southeastern Medical Oncology Center who cared for Shelton during his courageous fight with cancer. May God bless each of you.
