Leland Edward “Tink” Howell, 79, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Lenoir UNC Healthcare in Kinston.
Leland was born in Wayne County on January 26, 1939 to the late Leonard and Brady McClenny Howell. He had worked with Kemp Furniture for 25 years and then began working with the University of Mount Olive where he retired after 25 years of service. Leland proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Wayne County DAV.
Leland had a great sense of humor and was a practical jokester. He enjoyed time spent outside and was happiest when he was on a tractor or lawn mower. In earlier years Leland had a love for dirt bikes and relished in any opportunity to teach others how to ride.
A graveside service to celebrate Leland’s life will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Gina Barrow officiating, followed by military honors. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
Leland is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda Joyce Benson Howell; one nephew and several nieces he loved very much.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Velma Gay, Charlotte “Bobbie” Stokes and Edna “Beannie” Hooks; and brother, Leonard Howell, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the University of Mount Olive, 634 Henderson Street, Mt. Olive, NC 28365.
