Forrest Kirk Keller, 57, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a brief illness.
Kirk was born in Wayne County on January 30, 1961 to Robert Gene Keller and Mary Frank Mooring Keller of Goldsboro. He was a graduate of Rosewood High School where he served as his class president, president of the student body and where he excelled as an athlete. Kirk was co-captain of his high school football team.
Scouting played a large role in Kirk’s life. Kirk achieved the rank of Eagle at the age of 14 by completing his eagle project which was planting all the trees around Wayne Memorial Hospital. Through his scouting experience, Kirk developed a great love for Indian artifacts as well as Civil War artifacts and spent many hours searching for them.
Kirk was a 1984 graduate of North Carolina State University where he received his degree in Engineering Operations. He was currently serving as an instructor and advisor for Wayne Community College’s -“Business Administration/Operations Management” and “Mechanical Engineering Program”.
Kirk lived a life of dedication to his community. He served his community many ways including: President of the “Friends of Cliffs of the Neuse” State Park, Recent Chairman of the Wayne County Historical Association, Project manager of the WCC/Fort Macon Cannon Project that provided three new live fire cannons to the Fort Macon State Park, currently serving on the Friends board for Wayne County’s War Memorial located across from the Court House, helped design the new Veteran’s War Memorial in Mount Olive, Project leader for the WW II Veteran’s Interviews for Wayne County, served as emcees for United Way, Relay for Life and Kitty Askins Volunteer, Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation’s “Santa” during Lights Up every year as well as the Mount Olive Santa too, and Project Manager for the “Downtown Goldsboro Artifact Recovery Project”.
A service to celebrate Kirk’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at The First Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. Interment will be on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Renee Keller Stewart and husband Dave of Goldsboro; nieces and nephews, Sydney Kennedy and husband Devin, Spencer Mitchell and husband Adam, Braeden Stewart and Riley Stewart; and great-niece, Teagan Kennedy.
