This is the story of Vera Mae Nagy, known to friends as “Vickie.”
Vickie, 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Goldsboro, N.C., where she went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 16. Her final days were spent surrounded by her loving family who will miss and cherish her always.
Our beloved “Granny,” as she was also known, is survived by her husband, Charles “Charlie” Nagy, Lt. Col. (ret.), U.S. Air Force (USAF); her children, Steve Nagy (and wife Debra), Cheryl Laverty (and husband Steve, SMSgt. (ret.), USAF), and Gary Nagy (and wife Betty); her grandchildren, Lauren Harris (and husband Jon), Lindsay Carter (and husband Coleman), Maura Laverty, Corey Nagy, Ryan Nagy, Austin Nagy, and Michael Laverty; and her great grandchildren, Brayden Harris, Emma Harris, and Coleman Carter Jr. Vickie also had many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. She adored her family and spent her life putting their needs above her own, and would have had it no other way.
As the youngest of four girls, Vickie was born in Epes, Ala., and grew up in Mobile, Ala. She is also survived by her sister Betty Chrifone, Mobile, Ala., and preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Speights and Margaret Elizabeth, and sisters, Dot Hayles and Louise Smith. Vickie was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and prayed the rosary daily. She was known for her infectious smile, southern hospitality, and wonderful sense of humor. These were qualities she continued to demonstrate even in her final days.
In 1953, Vickie joined the USAF and served as a Registered Nurse and Second Lieutenant. She first met Charlie, who she outranked at the time, while they were both stationed at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) in Tampa, Fla. The couple later married on October 1, 1955 , which was the year Vickie was honorably discharged from the USAF. Charlie continued his military career where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel while Vickie focused on caring for their three children. They spent nearly 35 years traveling the world on different assignments, including Guam, Thailand, Japan, Philippines, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The family was last stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, N.C., where they eventually settled.
Vickie and Charlie were active members of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time on Seymour Johnson AFB. Vickie was a “proper lady” who kept her house in order and decorated for every holiday, and she also took pride in her appearance. Whether she was attending Sunday mass with her husband, visiting the Base Exchange (BX) with her daughter, or watching her boys on the golf course, you could count on Vickie to arrive in style for any occasion. From 1978-1999, Vickie owned an ear piercing store in Berkley Mall where her customers came from far and wide to get their ears pierced by “Miss Vickie.” She also worked in home health care services for seven years, helping patients throughout Wayne County. In her personal time, Vickie enjoyed watching and playing golf, spending time with family, and dancing with her grandchildren.
A devoted wife, loving mother and sister, proud grandmother and great grandmother, and maker of some of the best home cooking imaginable, Vickie was loved by many. This former nurse will forever be remembered as a true caregiver of her family who kept us strong in mind, body, and spirit.
A visitation will be held on April 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, 2873 US-117, Dudley, N.C.

A celebration of Vickie’s life will be held on April 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (base chapel), Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, N.C., with Father Jeffrey Bowker officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Wayne Memorial Park cemetery. Please join us for a reception following the ceremony at Charlie and Vickie’s home at 400 Southwood Drive, Goldsboro N.C.
