Betty Mae Thompson Elrod

Betty Mae Thompson Elrod, 89, passed away peacefully on Christmas Day at her home.

Betty was born in Emmanuel County, Georgia on February 3, 1928 to the late George Thompson, Jr. and Shellie Canady Thompson. Betty had a sparkle in her eye and a heartwarming, generous spirit, always making everyone feel at home. She lived a life of dedication to her family and friends, and to her community. Betty served her community many ways which includes: her volunteer work at Cherry Hospital, her service as a counselor with Wayne Domestic Violence, and as a charter member of the American Business Women’s Association. For her extensive work as a volunteer, she was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1983 and was also recognized by the ABWA as Woman of the Year, by the Goldsboro Jaycee’s as Woman of Year, and by Carolina Legal Services for her outstanding service. Her most significant role in life and what she did best was being a loving mother and friend to her daughter, Dale, who lived with her.

A service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2017 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. Interment will be follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at their home.

Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack Elrod; sister, Imogene James of Virginia Beach, VA; and several nieces and nephews she loved very much.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Dale Elrod; brothers, Tyrus Thompson, Jim Thompson, Ralph Thompson, and Harley Thompson; and sister, Sarah Barfield.
